Introductions / Re: Hey, y'all

Congrats!  The head of SM is great!

All in one attachment is definitely more convenient.  I guess I would say I prefer it that way, but I don't count it against the applicant if they attach them as separate documents.

(Bumping this back up to the top of the list....)

Also to add:
Cover Letter: The Cover letter is not an option.  It is the chance for the employer to learn something about you.  Why you are interested in said job.  Further explain work you have been or not been doing on your resume.  Your cover letter also reveals a little about your personality.  Ideally the cover letter is not in the body of your e-mail but also a separate document like your resume.  (However, in this day an age as long as it is a full length cover letter in the e-mail I'm not as bothered.  Others might have a different opinion)  You cover letter should not be: "Dear So and So, I would like to apply for XYZ position at ABC Theater.  Attached is my resume.  I look forward to hearing from you."  That tells me nothing.  And I begin to assume you are lazy.  You can in an e-mail be that short and say: "Dear So and So, I would like to apply for XYZ position at ABC Theater.  Attached is my cover letter and resume.  I look forward to hearing from you."  This lets the receiver know what job you are interested in and proceed accordingly with your letter and resume.

And as been mentioned many times before, it is far smarter to send out your information as a PDF.  Different computers/programs/operating systems will interpret a .doc differently - move tabs, go onto a second page.  A PDF pretty much guarantees that the receiver gets your resume & cover letter exactly as you intend them to be seen.

Happy job search 2013!

We are going that way as well.

The other tidbits I've learned so far... pre-prime the canvas with a clear gesso to get better coverage and use less paint.  Yes, this does effect what Ken can do to the canvas in the finishing, but for us the final image is more important than what Ken is doing.

We are looking at using a red Jell-O as the pigment that is added to the pot before priming (instantly dissolves in water and not strong enough to change the color.  Also, not taking credit for this idea, it came from a previous production)

We have two weeks to go before opening.  I will pass along anything else I learn.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Call Script Word Processor Mac App

1. I would want the ability to box text to attach to cues.  I think it would be great as you manipulated the text that cues adjusted as necessary. (Though this is not what your program is about, as a single script stage manager, I would want the ability to put markers in the script to reference blocking)
2. I do blocking on the back of the left side page.  Script and cues on the right side.
3. I like the text on the left side of the page and cues on the right.
4. I prefer page numbers in the upper right corner.
5. I generally use rectangles.  I too also use boxes for stand-bys and other things I need to say out loud or take special note of.

Good luck!

Oddly enough AEA / my business rep released me from 2 weeks of my regular contract for this.  They know.  My guess a lot of this is stemming from AEA bringing tours across the border into Canada.

Just to clarify, this is not a question about joining.  I've joined. It is a production with a Canadian producer, Canadian actress, hence the need for me to join.  The producer paid my initiation fee so no money out of my pocket.  As I said, cross border politics.

Just curious if anyone else had done this, but obviously the answer is no.

The Hardline / AEA vs CAEA
« on: Jan 03, 2013, 01:20 pm »
Due to cross-border union politics I am in an interesting situation where at my resident theater (usually a AEA LORT contract), I am having to join CAEA (ITA Contract) for one show that is coming in. The two contracts are close but have some subtle differences.  I love that CAEA spells out SM hours much more than AEA does.  It is also interesting to meld CAEA into an US structure.  Much different than say, me traveling to Canada for a job.  And people keep telling me I should take advantage of going to the chiropractor.  (Love the different health rules.)

Has anybody else done this?  In either direction?  Were there rules that caught you off guard?

You need to change the "Wrapping" to "Behind Text" and then you can move the object to wherever you want.

I can't help you with the header/footers as I don't find them that annoying (Mac using Office 2008).

That makes sense.  I was having a heard time wrapping my brain around putting a script into Excel.

Two theaters that I know run a March to December schedule: Goodspeed and North Shore Music Theater both New England area.  I know Goodspeed usually does their hiring around now.

(Though I know that might conflict with your summer...  ;) )
