Agreed with above comments.

Send it to the GM, who'll review contracts if there's an issue. If the director doesn't want them in, let the GM send the "yay" or "nay"...or the producer (depending on how hands on they are).  As the SM, I wouldn't jump in the middle of the hornets nest, but get a solid answer from the 'powers that be' [GM and/or Producer(s)], and enforce it as calmly and non-threatening as possible. You've gotta get the show up the best you can....especially if it seems doomed from the start (which seems to be the case with this production, according to the word on the street and rehearsal room).

Sounds like some silent politics going on...as happens, unfortunately.

Never a dull moment.

deja-cuing:  the ability to watch a production as an audience member, and at curtain rise, you immediately remember all the cues from the version you did, and as much as you resist it, can't help calling them in your head, and get irritated when the cues don't happen onstage.

the hotel hook-up: the fun gig you took on the outskirts of town, because it's easy, fits in your schedule, is just a one time
thing, and is great break from the other show you really don't like but are contracted to be with till it's
done or "death do you part".

I had a postshow 45 min clean-up (consisting of mostly washing dishes for a 3 course meal for 3 people, cooked and eaten during the show). And on this particular evening the director had planned to cook dinner for everyone after the performance. So I started with my usual post show duties and said I'll be over as soon as I'm done.
The actors then volunteered to clean and dry dishes and wouldn't leave until everything was done.
That was awesome.

The Hardline / Meal break and scheduling
« on: Jan 04, 2009, 12:00 am »
Is there a policy or understanding regarding whether or not meal breaks are pre-scheduled and listed on a rough monthly rehearsal calendar?

Thanks for the help :)

I'm just finishing up my last year of undgrad work and recently ran into a problem and I'm not quite sure how it should have been resolved.

I was stage managing a musical and the lighting designer stayed up to the start the second dress rehearsal and left, because he had to drive a couple states over to begin his summer work at a regional shakespeare festival. Now my problem occurred when the director-after the designer had left-decided he didn't like some of the light cues and personally went and changed them himself. I wasn't sure what to do. I wanted to tell the director he couldn't because he had already given the ok to the designer after our tech rehearsal, but I didn't want to step on any toes and cause problems between the director (who is also one of my professors) and myself. Ultimately, I had no choice but to allow the changes.

Should I have stood my ground? How are things suppose to be done? Does the director have any boundaries?

Thanks for any help.
