I came out to my parents at the same time that I told them that I was going into stage management. Although they thought poorly of a life in the theatre, they really couldn't stand the idea of me being a homosexual. I find that overshadowing the stage management issue with something else more "dramatic" worked for me. Now my parents don't mind the stage management aspect but have accepted that all of this is just part of who I am.

Hello, my name is Derek. I'm a junior theatre major at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. I have been SMing for about 6 years and am currently doing department productions as well as working as a SM for a Professional Road House that host some 290 events every year. I plan to attend grad school for my MFA (possibly from the University of Alabama, University of Iowa, or the University of Deleware).

I have stage managed auditions. Usually, they give you the menial tasks of paperwork and bringing in auditioners.

As for college, high school, and community theatre shows, I have every prompt book I have used. Most of the graduate programs that I am talking with have asked me to bring in examples (4 or 5) of my work to determine admission. Just a thought.

Yes, Prompters are still in use at several places throughout the country. I know at the Memphis Opera they have a full-time prompter position.

I am currently going the BA route at the University of Central Arkansas, and I love it. So few schools offer BFA's in Stage Management or Technical Theatre. I always suggest that students look into schools that are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) and that participate in the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival (KC/ACTF).

If you don't mind me askiing, what state are you in?

I absolutely love office supply stores. I was talking with a fellow SM two days ago, and she and I, both broke college students, have agreed to help each other by keeping the other away from such places unless necessary. ;)
