SMNetwork Archives / Re: Call Board Karma: Keep or drop?

Whenever someone posts, on the left side under their name it says what the karma is currently. Under that you can smite or add positive karma to that person.

I agree with smejs. I have been smited without posting anything that someone should be smited for. I posted my introduction and had a smite the very next day!!! I don't think it is that useful.

Although the Director might have some say, a Producer can do pretty much whatever they want, especially in non-union work.

Keep notes on costume changes, lighting/sound fx, scenery changes, and if you use a grand drape or travelers, when they open/close.

Basically a stage manager is the guy (or girl) in charge of making sure that everything is organized and progresses smoothly. As new issues arrive, dealing with props or costumes or the like, you  will inform the head of that department as  well as keep notes on all things that go on during rehearsal. You will also keep a copy of the script with blocking notes (notes that tell where the actors are and are moving and are doing on stage). If you need help don't hesitate to ask. Your director is there for you as well as the actors. Also, we are always here to answer any question, but in 2nd level education you'll always want to ask your director first. He might want to run things a bit differently than any of us are used to.
I love Grease!!! The most important thing to remember as a SM is to have fun and try to keep a clear head.

Okay, point taken (or maybe I should say pint taken). I won't smite you this time, smejs!

I think it's a horrible feature, personally. I think it is a very immature thing to have on such a professional forum.

My university theatre is dealing with a related issue currently. We have made the transition to only e-mail communication and it is horrible. So many people are not receiving e-mails that has become pointless to e-mail anything. Just a thought.

When I was child actor, I was doing a performance of The Sound of Music that was running in rep for a month with The King and I, which I was also in. After the first week of performance our SM walked out without leaving the prompt book. We were lucky that the SM for The King and I was also the ASM for The Sound of Music. He brought his copy of the script (with all of the cues written in) and called the show. We were very lucky to have him as ASM/SM. We were also lucky that the ASM for TK&I was a PA for TSofM.

That's a really neat concept. You should think about marketing it. I know of a lot of SM's who might want a binder like that.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: First time Sming

Definitely chat with your TD and Director about what they want out of their SM, but also talk to past SM's and see if they have any advice about working with your Director/TD.

Stage Management: Other / Professional Road House

I am currently working at a Professional Road House as a SM, Loader, Fly Boy, Follow Spot Operator, Light Board Operator, Dresser, etc., and was just wondering what have been your experiences with Road Houses? Does anybody out there currently work at a Road House besides me?

The Hardline / Re: Copyright laws

Oh yeah,
On photocopying scripts you are supposed to pay for another script use for each additional copy. Usually an SM can make prompt, blocking, etc. copies without having to pay.

I am working with a director that I  have not worked with before because I have just transfered to this University. I am a little nervous because every director I have worked with prior to this one I have known on a personal level as well as on the academic/professional level. What are some of the things you guys do to get adjusted with your new directors?
