Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: The Ultimate Decision
« on: Oct 19, 2006, 11:58 pm »
For me, I was a child actor who worked for professional theatres. I first SMed in High School and went to college to be a political science, history, pre-law major, but I just wasn't happy. While doing all of this in college I began sming for the music department and then decided that this is definitely what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Now I'm working in a road house while attending undergrad and looking forward to grad school.

There are several posts on this topic within the Students and Novice Stage Managers Board. Feel Free to check out all of the boards, but this board will probably be your biggest support.

The Hardline / Union Membership
« on: Oct 18, 2006, 12:03 am »
I am working on trying to help beef up my university's curriculum and think a course on unions would be beneficial. Just trying to get facts for my proposal.

My University is starting a Profession Non-Profit Theatre that will perform three shows in repertory each summer with 3 SM-interns. I was just wondering if anybody out there has experienced something like this and if they can tell me what to expect.

What would be your specific tasks?

Production managers are over events or multiple shows while SM's are over a single show.

Stage Management: Other / Beauty Pageants

I SMed my first beauty pageant about a week and a half ago. I hated it. The contestants weren't the bad part. It was the coordinators and producers. I was just wanting know, has this been others experience or has anybody completely oppossite experiences.

Look up the member Ran. He's a new member that lives in Italy, is from Germany, and lived in the Netherlands for five years. He would be a good resource to talk with.

College and Graduate Studies / Re: Grad School vs Experience
« on: Oct 13, 2006, 03:12 pm »
I"m going to go to grad school primarily because of my geographic location. Arkansas is not the best area for theatre so to make connections you pretty much have to go to grad school.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Running Tech, etc.
« on: Oct 10, 2006, 06:33 pm »
If it is a dry tech you are working with technicians only going from cue to cue (Q2Q). If it is a wet tech, it could be a Q2Q with actors and techs or a the first runthroughs with actors and techs. A paper tech is where the SM sits with designers and technical director to discuss how tech week will be run (you are running the meeting). I usually wait between 5-10 seconds for a standby and a go. That really depends on how many cues are in the sequence and how quickly the sequence moves (and how fast your ops move).

At my school, SM's and ASM's have to be at every production meeting, rehearsal, performance, and are suggested to work in the shop on set construction as much as possible to become familiar with the set and how far along work has come on the set.

Ask your choreographer if you can get a copy of her work for the show. She may need to explain a lot of it to you, but that's the easiest way in my opinion.

Stage Management: Other / Re: Sming for Dance

My operatic voice teacher told me that the term was first used at La Scala and that it would mean a full house, but that the street sweepers would have to pick up a lot of "merde" from outside of the opera house.
