I'm pretty new to the whole SMing thing, but I have many good friends who are SMs.  From what I have observed/been told over the years,  SM's don't handle show casting.  Normaly the director, coreogropher, musical director, producer, and or a casting director makes that decsion, and makes the phone calls.  However, if it is a small company and they don't have the many positions listed, it can be placed in your shoes to a certain degree.  The Director should ALWAYS be included in casting.  Now I do know of cases where the Director, Producer, ect.. have asked SM's for any ideas on who to call to fill a role. (wether from someone dropping out of the show, or an injury.)

What is your opinion?  Is it hard to get work as a SM if you have a day job?

I am currently working at a theatre located in a resort.  So as a thankyou, the upper management of the resort sets up a lunch for the cast and crew for our 10/12.  Its a nice little swaray, that really boosts moral.

SMNetwork Archives / Re: Drinking Games
« on: Oct 06, 2006, 01:24 am »
here is a great one for anyone doing "The Wizard of Oz".  The rules are simple, anytime someone says "follow" you take a drink.

P.S.  In the first 15-20 mins. of the show you're gone.

P.P.S I would like to make it clear that I have never played this game during a rehersal or performence, and I DO NOT ENCOURAGE IT, but we did take the CD to the drinking table.  (yes a designated table w/ players club seating on our summer stock rehersal pad)

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Stop The Show!
« on: Oct 01, 2006, 11:53 pm »
This wasn't a show stop, but it was a Cancel while the audience was seated.  I was working on a production of "Ruthless the Musical" at a resort.  We were gearing up for a 2pm sunday show, when we were told that the resort was going to shut power down for 20 Mins. starting at 1pm.  so after we set up for the show we proceeded shut our systems down to provent any problems after power was to be restored.  Well 1 O'clock hit and we still had power, 1:10,1:20....1:47 p.m. they finally shut power down.  (mind you we have a 2 o'clock show and a 20 min power outage)  We didn't get power back untill almost 3PM!!!  we were still going to do the show, the audience (most of them) stayed with us.  But, (yes BUT) while I was running around making sure systems where ok and running normal, and my SM, ASM, and PA where dealing with Equity problem about doing the show after a long hold, we lost all control over the entire lighting system.  Since we had power back the emergency back up shut off, but we lost all house lights because there was no signal to the rack.  We called the show and sent the patrons home with there mony back and a voucher for a free show.  The cause of this ended up being a bad back up battery system in the signal distro rack.  when power came online it stayed on back up untill the battery died.
