Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Festivals?
« on: Mar 05, 2007, 10:38 pm »
I may be wrong, but I really don't think that there is much difference.  In a "festival" situation, you may have to do different shows that require different cues and scenic elements, whereas in a regular show you are only dealing with one show.  I would just wait until you get more information... find out what shows/pieces you will be working on, what needs to be done for each piece, if the pieces are going to be back to back or if you are going to have breaks between,  etc... but overall I think it would pretty much be the same thing.

I opened it on my Mac.... but I have one of the Intel Macbook's so I don't know if that has something to do with it.  It's a pretty cool little gadget.

P.S. LONG LIVE THE ALMIGHTY MAC!

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: schedule
« on: Feb 28, 2007, 07:43 am »
Honestly.. my life revolves around shows.  I plan all my classes in the mornings and am out by noon, then work a part-time job Monday - Friday 2-6pm.  Then my schedule is pretty much free and I make sure that I can attend all rehearsals.  The thing about Stage Management is that you need to be there at all times, from rehearsals to the run of the show. You have to be flexible and be able to get things done. I'm not saying that you can't do other things, because I do several other things.  I'm the VP of Alpha Psi Omega at my university and have other obligations, but I always make sure that they work around the rehearsal schedule of the show I am doing at that time.  I personally think that maybe you should look at cutting back on dance classes, or maybe get separate lessons that don't conflict with rehearsals.  Again, this is just my personal opinion, but I definitely think that if you want to be a SM and you know thats what you want to do, then you need to make sure that you are as available as possible to work on shows and be there when you need to be.

College and Graduate Studies / Re: Yale.

Yes, I have definitely thought about the money situation and what I would be paying off over time.  Luckily I had a scholarship all 4 years of undergrad, so the only debt I will have to pay off is grad school.

Matthew, if I may ask, what was your academic status and SM experience upon applying to the school?  And do you think that you and I could talk away from the forum further in pm or email? As I mentioned, my advisor says that she thinks I will have no problem, but I'm nervous about getting into a grad school period, not to mention Yale. I've been looking at grad school since I entered undergrad and have done more than my fair share of research, and now is the time where I really need to start narrowing down my options.

The theatre I work for is really old and historic (one of the first in the country, it was designed by the guy who designed the Ford Theatre) and I have found my own little niche! I call every show that I do here in.. are you guys ready... the house left opera box.  And I love it.  The opera box is never used in any show for some reason, and there are curtains that completely shield me from the audience. It's raised about 5 feet above the stage, and I have a perfect few of everything.  Everyone who works at the theatre knows that I will call there, so they fix me a little table with a light and comfy chair and all kinds of cool stuff to help me call the show. That way I don't get in anyone's way backstage (and no one can distract me), I have my own little area to watch the show and talk to everyone on headset, and I'm not fighting noise issues by sitting out in the house.  I also hate calling in booths because I feel so far away and disconnected from the show, and I like to be close just in case there are any emergencies.  In your case, i would definitely recommend calling from backstage.

I know that this is completely off subject a bit and I apologize, but I want to come see Evita at UNC Chapel Hill! I go up there all the time because I have several friends there (I'm in Wilmington), so can you post the run times/dates?  Thanks!

College and Graduate Studies / Yale.
« on: Feb 26, 2007, 02:34 pm »
Ok so... my advisor is really really pushing me to apply to Yale for their MFA in Stage Management program.  She says that I have more than a chance to get in...and although I'm not really that confident, it has peaked my interest quite a bit.  I've been looking at U/RTA schools more than anything else; however... does anyone know anything about the Yale School of Drama/MFA program in Stage Management besides the information they provide online or in their mailings?  I'm sick of reading all of this stuff that every college says in every bulletin or brochure about their program.. I'm really interested in some real facts and/or thoughts about their program.  Some people (here at least) have a running joke about "Yale-ies" and how the people there are extremely snobby and blah de blah blah.. so I'd just really like to see what everyone thinks.

There are tons of topics regarding the defintion of stage management and the responsibilities of a SM here on the board.  However, if you want to conduct a sort of independent study where you ask people to answer specific questions, I would definitely recommend posting them on here, and then whoever wants to answer them can.. you can then contact them directly for citation information.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: 1 or 2 Scripts?
« on: Feb 25, 2007, 07:21 pm »
I always use two scripts.  It just makes it so much easier for me, even if there isn't a whole lot of blocking.  I use a Script Notes sheet for my blocking that I attach on the opposite side of the script page that helps with keeping blocking organized.  Although my blocking notes aren't actually on my script, I still don't want to flip through other pages while I'm calling cues.  Either way, two scripts always work best for me!

I'm also very willing as well if you need anyone else!

Spread sheet is how I usually go as well.. with microphone numbers, character name and actor.

Check in our uploaded forms section, there may be on there.  I'm not completely sure though, so don't hold me to it!

I'm doing a job with TriArts this summer in Connecticut... I know that they offer internships.

Here is a copy of a rehearsal report for Cats, which I closed this past year.  I've used this format since I've been SM'ing and everyone loves it.  In Word format.  Enjoy!

For time, I do the following:

House Open: Time
Curtain Speech: Start Time/End Time
Act I: Start Time/End Time
Act I: Scene Shifts (Total Time)
Intermission: Start Time/End Time
Act II: Start Time/End Time
Act II: Scene Shifts (Total Time)
Curtain Call: Start Time/End Time

Then, at the end I do this:
Curtain Speech Run Time
Act I: Run Time without scene shifts
Act I: Run Time with Scene Shifts
Intermission Run Time
Act II: Run Time without scene shifts
Act II: Run Time with Scene Shifts
Curtain Call Run Time
Total Show Run Time without shifts, intermission, ect.
Total Show Run Time with scene shifts, intermission, etc.

I kinda go overboard because I am completely neurotic about time.  I guess its all in how much detail you prefer.  However, I do think run time on a performance report is completely appropriate.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: marijuana and theatre
« on: Jan 31, 2007, 02:48 pm »
One of our TD's at a theatre I worked for was actually fired after showing up to work high, and we later discovered that she would smoke at the theatre at the end of of the night once the SM's had locked up and everyone went home.  It's a serious issue and can cause problems.  I completely agree that what one does on their own time is their business.  You don't do it at work, especially if you work in a theatre.

And the vodka thing is a pretty cool trick.  ;)
