College and Graduate Studies / Re: Equity Courses
« on: Sep 20, 2006, 06:23 pm »
There was no specific class on equity at my school, but the PM was a very knowledgeable member of Equity and talked about it and the other unions in his classes. We also had a rule-book that was based on Equity Rules. I believe they were based on the SPT agreement.

Thanks Tigerr. You gave me an idea. So if this did happen they may not be able to do all languages at once. If this sounds like something remotely interesting to you, what languages would you be interested. I was thinking English, Spanish, French and Italian might be popular languages. Any thoughts?

How about...  I am on your side!  I am not out to get you!  If it seems like I am, bring it to my attention!!!

Ditto to that. Additionally I would say please pay attention to e-mails and items on the call board and respond when a response is requested.  :)

Thanks Mac. That's a great idea.

Tools of the Trade / Re: What is Gaffer Tape?
« on: Sep 12, 2006, 05:41 pm »
Gaff tape is the best stuff on earth!

Never ever ever buy cheap Gaff tape. I too had to pull up residue from crappy gaff tape from marley floor that got wet because of a leak in the ceiling... It was not fun....

Currently, you can go to their website and translate single words for free in selected languages. What I would really love is to be able to buy an electronic edition of the book (I already own one hard copy). Really I would love to be able to know how to pronounce the words, instead of taking a stab in the dark and butchering it badly. Kind of teach-yourself how to speak another language kind of thing. So I am wondering if there is any interest at all or if I am on my own on this. I know SMNetwork may not be the ideal place to post this, but its the only place I know of, so if you have other suggestions for places to post this, please PM me.

SMNetwork Archives / International Dictionary (Theatre Words)
« on: Sep 12, 2006, 01:42 pm »
This is a question for all of you that have toured, are planning on touring, or just like to know how to say "places, please" in other languages.

There is a book called Theatre Words (as I'm sure you know) that has theatre terms in many different languages. How would you feel about an electronic version of the book, that had pronunciations? Would this be more or less helpful than having the actual book?

A friend of mine was telling me about the Juilliard Professinal Internship. Has anyone here done it or been involved with it? This is kind of a stupid question, but how do people feel about Juilliard (and their internship) in the professional world?

Tools of the Trade / Re: Condom reference??
« on: Sep 05, 2006, 06:11 pm »
When I was working at a Dance Festival, we had a company that required the use of 8 lavs for a world premiere. Having never used wireless mics before, it was very entertaining explaining to their Manager they needed to buy unlubricated condoms. It was even more entertaining to see her walking down the hall yelling into her cellphone because of bad reception while a group of non-theatre people was touring the building...:)

SMNetwork Archives / Re: Happy Stage Management Memories?
« on: Sep 05, 2006, 04:49 pm »
I was doing You Can't Take it With You when suddenly in the middle of the show the audience started pointing at the ceiling (it was in the round) and yelling. One of our lights had an old three-fer that wasn't plugged in correctly and had caught on fire and was melting in the middle of a show. So one of the actors grabbed a fire extinguisher and put the fire out. Someone had pulled the fire alarm so we had to evacuate and no one could be in the building because the powder from the extinguisher went everywhere and it is an irritant. Once everyone was outside we told them we were going to finish the show in the front (there were about 20 minutes left). The audience went to the front and we asked them to clear some space for the actors to perform and they cleared some room. It was very interesting to see the actors go from round to proscenium in a bout 30 seconds. So, right as they were going to continue, the Fire Deparment shows up and  they were a little confused why there were so many people gathered around outside. After a little while one of the actors asked them to turn off the engine so they could finish. And they did. The patrons were the best audience we had and as they were leaving they said things like you've got the hottest show in town. It was kind of a nightmare since it was my first time stopping a show, but the audience and the actors and the FD really pulled through and made it happen.

The Hardline / Correction to my previous post
« on: Aug 31, 2006, 03:03 pm »
So I saw an SSDC contract yesterday and got a little lesson in SSDC. Basically once you join SSDC, you are supposed to tell the theatres you are working with and they need to give you an SDSC contract. By being on an SSDC contract the producer pays into your health and pension and I believe it also requires the SSDC logo be put on the program.

The Hardline / Re: MRE
« on: Aug 31, 2006, 02:40 pm »
I am on an SPT.

The rule says something to the effect that any Actor can can use that clause as long as they are not getting paid more than they would be if on a LORT contract. It has a specification that it can't be used a week before the first public performance and 2 days after it, or something. Since it does not specifically say it doesn't apply to SMs, the term Actor refers to any equity member covered under that contract.

I'll have to check whether or not it applies to SMs and report back.

Has anyone ever used the MRE clause of the equity contract? Does it even apply to SMs? I think it does but I am not sure. If you have used it. How long were you away and how did it go over?

Disclaimer: I am not in any way associated with SSDC, so the information below could be wrong. If it is, someone please correct me.

In regards to the original point, it is my understanding that SSDC does not have "agreements" per se, the way that AEA does. That is if you had your card and you were working as an actor/SM you would have to work under an equity contract. As far as I understand SSDC does not work that way at all. Rather they have a template kind of contract you can use should you need it, but membership doesn't prevent you from working anywhere. Just my 2 cents...

The Hardline / Re: What Colleges (Don't) Say About AEA?
« on: Aug 24, 2006, 04:50 pm »
I did my undergrad in Arizona and never heard Equity being mentioned until my final semester. Our PM, who taught the very small SM class spent a week covering all of the unions in the 4As and the pros and cons of working union, etc. Even then, it was only a few of us that were able to take the class. I also saw the John Holly give the powerpoint presentation at our school. It was very informative and a great powerpoint. Unfortunately there were not many people in attendance...
