I have to fill in form show reports for panto every year & there's a section for 'audience reaction'. It drives me crazy, we have 2 shows a day for 6 weeks. Not only is the show the same every time, it's the same every *year*. It's identical every time, I really did know what they expect me to write!

Although it was not a long run tour, I had to do this for a kids show also. I found that putting in a quote I had heard from the audience was super worthwhile, easy and creative loved it. They are kids, there will always be one that reacts differently to what we expect, or says something hilarious. The tour manager (duties included FOH and Box Office for our tour) would often catch quotes upon them leaving the auditorium too.

The Green Room / Re: Moving to fight off burnout
« on: Jun 12, 2017, 01:15 am »
First of all I absolutely commend you for recognising that you are burnt out and needing a break. I see so many people in the industry in or close to burn out but fooling themselves that they are fine, it does not usually end well.

I am from a small country so I am always in a state of transient freelancing (I think there are about 3 full time permanent positions as SM in New Zealand) and the rest of us are hired show by show. It is kind of freeing, because you take work if and when you want it, and you can be picky about who you work with and for. On the other hand, if you are not working, you are not getting paid, so that is a stress of a different type, but just as real. I am fortunate enough to have a previous degree in teaching that I can 'fall back on' and I am making money between gigs doing some substitute teaching.

When I first started doing this professionally, a mentor suggested I have a non theatre related hobby. It really has helped. (I dabble in computer programming and Project Euler)

Good Luck,
Ruth

Introductions / Re: SM Down Under

Why thank you.:)

I think it is called supply teaching or substitute teaching.
I am filling in for a lady on maternity leave for 6 months.
My patience and ability to perform under pressure are tested A LOT

Introductions / SM Down Under
« on: May 29, 2017, 03:07 pm »
I have been lurking on this site for a while now, I thought it was time to step out of the wings. :)

I am a contract SM from New Zealand, fairly new to the industry.  I have worked in ballet, opera and with a touring children's theatre company for the past 3 years. Currently back high school relief teaching to replenish the bank account before I jump back into the industry in August.

Teaching high school is a lot like Stage Managing...

Tools of the Trade / Fireproof plastic
« on: Sep 18, 2012, 06:07 pm »
Hi there,

We are having trouble sourcing 'inherently fire retardant' clear plastic. It is to frame a black box theatre and will be hung from the grid.
We sourced some in the States, but the problem was the shipping to New Zealand put the purchase way out of our budget.

Does anyone have any ideas of where we could source some closer to home?
Or perhaps any type of plastic we may not have considered, the fire retardant-ness is important though.

At the moment we are running tests on PVC used in green houses. We are hopeful, but are also exploring other options.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Tool Belt
« on: Jun 28, 2012, 12:34 am »
I used to use a gardening pouch thing that I found in a hardware store and painstakingly taped black.
But I am now doing a degree in SM (and other things) and the first thing we did was learn to use the industrial sewing machines and we made ... tool belts!!
It was a bit tough giving the old one up, lots of memories :(
