I'm 16. I stage manage at a local community theatre as well as my high school. It is really hard sometimes in community theatre. I always work with actors who are older and see me as a kid. They often think it is some sort of "playing dress up" deal. Usually by tech week, I have earned their respect. That is really rewarding and definitely worth all my work.
Although the teens in community theatre are the hardest. Since they are my age, they don't EVER listen. They have no respect for me or my work.....Often they don't even have respect for the director or the venue... They blow off everything I say. It is really frustrating.

I have no advice but I do have my sincere condolences....

I told my family at thanksgiving that I wanted to pursue a career in theatre...My uncle told me that i should serve the food because I would have to get used to food service. Don't worry. It will work out.

I ADORE retractable sharpies. I will never go back....In fact I bought 2 new ones today. I have them stationed through my house right next to a pad of post it notes. They do dry out a bit faster than normal ones but if you remember to retract them(i occasionally forget) they last a while longer.

I also love recycled post it notes. They help the environment and they help me remember things. Its a win, win situation. ^-^

O and i thought of something else i love.
During work that doesn't require a heavy duty work glove i use weight lifter gloves. They are fingerless and leather palmed. I LOVE THEM!

I am a sophomore and I work with a lot of upper class men. Its usually best to make them aware that they are a necessity in a way that doesn't give them a complex.
Also most people don't like being reminded that they HAVE to do anything (even if they do.) Most people are more responsive to being asked to do something in a stern, rather than forceful, way. So the phrase "in charge of them" is a phrase to stay away from. People don't respond well to that kind of phrasing.
It will all work out once they respect you. Give them a reason to.

I have never had an ASM. So I have no idea about what duties to give him or what is traditionally his responsibility. HELP?  ??? When I was an ASM I was basically a gopher. So what was you guys' ASM experiences like?
I'm so used to doing everything myself that I am afraid he won't get to do anything. And he is super eager to learn. Any suggestions? THANKS! ;D

They are called Dinkles. Marching bands use them. They are super comfortable and come in flat black. I can wear them for 6 hours of tech and not feel a thing. They rock. http://www.dinkles.com/purchase.asp

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
