It's kind of a tradition in my school to hand out little gifts to members of our cast/crew on closing night before strike. Last year, we gave out handmade miniature Audrey II's because we did Little Shop of Horrors. This year, we're doing Jesus Christ Superstar, and my director and I are totally stumped on what to give, and this is something we should have had decided like, a month a go. Do you guys have any ideas??

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Bad ASM's
« on: Oct 26, 2007, 07:59 pm »
I have an ASM who has NEVER done stage managment before, and came to us only knowing the blocking notations (she has only had two years of high school drama class. that's it). She has a big mouth, and often doesn't know when to stop talking, and is seriously getting on my nerves, as well as our cast members. I can only think about the long run- our show opens in April- and I can forsee her getting her head bit off during Tech because she has no idea how tech works.

In the world of professional theatre, she would be fired. But since this is High School, we have to keep her because she would take it to the administration.

I don't know if  this sounds selfish, but I've worked towards this position for three years, and I'm now in my final year, lined up for a Tech Theatre/Stage Management course in University, and now I have to run a show AND train an ASM incase something happens to me? I don't know how I'm supposed to deal with this. I'm level headed, I feel terrible if I freak out at people, and I don't know how to deal with her. PLEASE, help.

Super embarassing story...

Last year during strike of Little Shop of Horrors, we were in the middle of taking down one of our major set pieces and our set designer started kicking one of the 2x4's that supported it to take it down, and missed, and kicked the flat into my abdomen, causing me to drop the set and double over.

I was carrying it out of the lift twenty minutes later.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Jesus Christ Superstar

I too have done JCS but I did have a score.  I put in the a 2 ring binder and put score of left side and blocking pages on the right side just like I do with straight plays.

I a curious why you don't have access to the score.  But maybe I am not understanding your question.

When you say you had a score... Do you mean you had an actual script? And not the vocal book?

I just have a copy of the vocal book, and the piano accompanists score, and I'm currently calling out of the vocal book and writing my notes on the side in a 3 ring binder. I've just found it a little awkward not having the "security blanket" (ie character descriptions, prop lists, etc.) at the back of the book... I was interested in seeing how other people have delt with JCS, expecially because we're in the early stages of production and my ASM doesn't know left from right. Thank you!

Hey guys,

I'm currently working with JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, and like most SM's, I'm used to having my stage directions already in the score- however, Jesus is different. Jesus Christ Superstar does not have a score attacted to it, and thus, I'm working out of a vocal book. So, that's where you lot come in. I'm curious if anyone's done JCSS before, and how they've dealt with this problem. THANK YOU GINORMOUSLY.
