As being a spot myself the way that I have seen and done. The way I like it if I have a cue sheet because then I know a head of time, sometimes I do not get one (Nutcracker is here every year and my sound teacher and boss calls the spot cues, but there is not that many cues know!). Also when we have tours coming I usually do not have a rehearsal, I just get told by the other spot opt when I am suppose to go or the Lighting person or sound. But the cue sheet helps. Sometimes the Light Designer might put the spot opts with a lighting cue, it gets confusing but it does work. If you can sit down with the spot opts before the rehearsal starts.  ;D

The Hardline / Re: Use of Technology (Videotaping Performances)

I agree with everybody, I think it would be a good idea. I had a similar thought but mine was videotaping the rehearsals for blocking purpose. Sometimes when I do a show, I am still writing blocking or the director has questions. I know that its not feasable but it would help in the long run!

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: The Ultimate Decision

How did I get into Stage Managing. I go to a two year school. I got interested when I was running fly for a show, that my school was putting on. It also happened when I was in lighting class. My TD and teacher asked  you want to read the cues and I was like yeah I would. It kind of happened naturally. The following I ASMed and with a few mistakes, I was hooked. I like the stress, I like being in the centered of communitcating. I love calling cues. I want to get better. After my first show I was hooked. After that I have been ASMing and SMing since I have been at a two year school. Its the one thing that I feel good about at times. Last year, we did a Brecht piece called the Threepenny Opera, me  and my friend whom I have worked under before, we took it under control everything, from running the show to making the prop list. I have learned from people who are my friends as well as mentors! I will wait until after we close, I will save it for later.

But what if it is a van show. My school we gets a lot of those. Does the Stage Manager calls the next venue, to tell them what the technical aspects are or needs?

Thanks,
Maria

That is really weird because I am stage managing Rumors right know! If you have any questions about the show let me know. What I found to be really useful is the books that are out there for Stage Management. Go to Barnes and Noble and look up Stage Management. Its a yellow book and there is a lot of good books.

On having a ASM. Which is great, make sure you are up front with them. If you ever ASM look at what you did espcially if they have never ASM before. Have a meeting with them before the rehearsal process and tell them what you except of them. One thing I got told is tell them you will be in charge of props, and line notes. If it is a big musical and you have a cast say 20 or larger then have the ASM deal with the chorus and you deal with the leads, that way everything is under control for the most part.

I want to thank you both. My college is a two year and so we have community members in our show. I have had an actor change her lipstick! To chapstick  (community membe!).

SMNetwork Archives / Drinks, Teas...

I was wondering if anyone had any solutions on dealing with drinks onstage. I know tea is the best solution but what if your cast does not like tea. Has anyone done Rumors by Neil Simon? What if your director says one thing and does another what is the best way with dealing with this?
