Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: rehearsal spaces
« on: Nov 08, 2019, 04:39 pm »
I spent the summer rehearsing in the community room of a local firehouse. They had no real understanding of what we did, but they were so nice and accommodating. We left our stuff out all the time, except for 2 Saturday nights (our day off was Sunday) because there were parties on those days off in the room.

I've also rehearsed in the theatre of a community college that was open but had no theatre happening during the summer session.

Any other dinner theater stage managers here? I've been the resident stage manager at a dinner theater in upstate NY for about 3 years now and while I've appreciated the steady paycheck, I definitely miss a more traditional theater environment. My booth is more of a tech table in the back of the house with a table on either side that patrons can sit at. I constantly get asked questions that don't pertain at all to stage managing because I'm out in the house, at my booth, and easily approachable.

Anyone else at a dinner theater experience similar things?

I'm also a stage manager at a dinner theatre in Upstate NY, also for 3 years! Where are you and why aren't we friends?!

Stage Management: Other / Re: Opera score: printing and binding
« on: Sep 25, 2018, 05:04 pm »
I think I'm the ARC notebook user that Jerry mentioned!  ;D

I also prefer double sided music and a double sided blocking page. I'll remove them if they're empty or for fast sections before I call the show for the first time. (I leave them in for tech in case staging needs to be clarified for spacing or a designer.)

As an ASM, I will use a full page GP to note chorus placement, and otherwise I use post it tape in my book for notes.

Hi TarytheA,
I professionally live 100% in the opera world so I'll give my 2 cents here. As both a PSM and ASM I double side 3-hole punch all my scores. I like the flexibility and ability to add or remove pages that you don't get with the spiral binding.

When I'm a PSM I'll double side my blocking pages and just insert them into the score and deal with the blocking page being on whatever side of the binder it ends up on. By the time calling comes, I'm not looking at the blocking much anyways and sometimes remove those pages for fast sections. If you have the pleasure of working with an AD, maintaining the artistic integrity is their task, so missing some blocking isn't the end of the world.

As an ASM, no slip page. Blocking isn't their domain, and with all the traveling you have to do as an ASM, less weight is better.

I've also seen an ARC notebook used which looks to provide a happy medium with being able to add pages but having the portability of comb binding. Haven't looked into this with any depth though.

That's what I got, happy to answer any more quesitions.

I'm currently using alcohol-free clear hair gel in a vintage crystal ashtray with no problems.

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for an example of cues written into a score only, not a libretto or a mix of script and score.

Thanks!

Hi,

Here's a link to a sampling from the opera that I called last week (it was too big to attach). Some things to note: I came on the this as a calling SM and really only attended the 3 rehearsals before tech, so there's some rough blocking in there as reference points for myself. Also, it's a little sloppier than I normally like but I only got the cues a few hours (!!!) before the first performance. I also couldn't get my labels to print in the right place, and that I cannot figure out. I called Lights, Sound, Video, Scene Shifts and SL Entrances over headset as there was no ASM. There were no rail cues.

I've not done this, but I PSMed Leonard Bernstein's Mass last spring, and just wrote blocking in my score. I've tried the whole slip sheet thing with the folded corners, and I just don't like it. My cast had 16 Street Chorus (soloists), 2 choirs, a boys choir, a ballet company and the Mummers, so similar in size I think. I just treated it as I would any other opera that I SM.

As for the score, I was given a bound copy by the producers, and i took a few hours to scan, crop and re-print for my own notebook. No digital copy of this score existed, so I actually created it for them.

The Green Room / Re: Facebook Group for SMNet members
« on: Dec 09, 2015, 02:39 am »
Maybe not the appropriate place to post this, but I have to say that I have seen that particular person's behavior over several different SM groups on Facebook and it's pretty much the same M.O. in each one. I have to admit that it's a pretty big turn off and should I ever come across his resume it's certainly going to weigh heavily against his favor.

That's only the tip of the iceberg with this individual, I'm afraid. I'm sorry that you had to deal with such disrespect Kay, and that as a result you are forced to take the group down completely.

I second what Ruth said. I'm wondering, from your question, if you're actually looking for compare and contrast information on how new plays/musicals rehearse versus existing or established shows? I work on a lot of new musicals, and would be happy to answer questions if that's what you mean.

The Green Room / Re: Smart Watch use in rehearsal

I just got the Apple watch . . . and I have to say I love it for the purposes you listed.  I just scan to my wrist, checkout the message and make a decision if I need to pull out the phone.

How's the battery life on your phone with the bluetooth connectivity between it and the watch?

These are great questions! I've PMed you - and I'm thinking about this post too to see what I might add.

I'm wondering if anyone has any breakdowns or paperwork in general for Leonard Bernstein's Mass?

Thanks in advance!

Ginger ale and alka-seltzer. Normally, I use 1/2 tab for 1 full bottle of champagne to make it pop and not explode, so I'd start by experimenting with a full tab and adding from there.
