« on: Oct 02, 2015, 07:14 pm »
Can anyone recommend a recording of Carmen with the sung recits for timing purposes?

Thanks!

Ok, so I'm going to stir the pot a little here, but this is worth it to me.

Having worked in regional Opera for over a decade, there is a trend in small AGMA houses to not offer travel and housing although the Collective Bargaining Agreement requires it.

Let me say, first and foremost, that if a company wishes to only hire local, have at it. Advertise the position as such.

Performing a nationwide search for Stage Management, and just ignoring that part of the CBA that talks about travel and housing is an absolute outrage to me, and it makes my blood boil that AGMA is allowing it.  A company does not have the right to dismiss or ignore part of the CBA, similar to the fact that I do not have the right to waive part of the CBA while I'm under an AGMA contract.

The response I got when I asked AGMA about it - "It's a trend, and like most trends, it will go away eventually."

Thoughts? Comments? Outlandish accusations?

The Hardline / AGMA Guest Artist contract
« on: Apr 08, 2009, 10:02 pm »
I was wondering if any of my fellow AGMA members have had any luck with the AGMA Guest Artist Contract.  How were you able to convince your non-union employer to sign the contract?  Is it really worth the effort?

Employment / Read your contracts carefully
« on: Mar 26, 2009, 05:14 pm »
I've really been torn about whether or not to post about this, but since this has happened three times in three months, I think it's worth alerting the network.

During the past three months, three separate companies have pulled a fast one on me because I was not practicing what I know to be good business sense, and taking people for their word.

For those of us who freelance in the non union world, I send out this warning and advice, PLEASE make sure you read your contracts with a fine toothed comb, make sure the producer signs it first (as all Equity contracts have to be), make sure you have a copy, and make sure you stand up when you know you are being taken advantage of.  These are tough times for producers and artists alike, but NOTHING is an appropriate excuse for a company to take advantage of contract employees.  Twice now I've completed gigs and not had my full travel reimbursed (due to budget), and one contract was "cancelled" after I signed it and before the producer signed it.

I dare not write more at the moment as I'm seething with anger, but I urge you all to keep your ever watchful eyes on your finances especially in these troubled times.

If you have questions regarding this post, please feel free to PM me.

Stage Management: Other / Your most interesting "Other" Project
« on: Oct 11, 2008, 01:35 am »
Just out of curiosity, I wanted to poll the Network to see what the craziest thing is that you've ever "stage managed" . . . .

Mine has got to be a circuit party that had aerial performers in it . . .It was a long process, long load in, no tech, fly by the seat of your pants special event fundraiser that was just over the top.  Over 24 hours nonstop.

Tools of the Trade / Freeware Graphics program suggestions
« on: Aug 26, 2008, 03:30 pm »
I'm looking for a fairly decent freeware graphics program to assist in creating diagrams for the props run crew for my current production.  Does anyone have any suggestions or anything that works well for such applications?

I'm looking for something better than Word or Paint on a Windows based PC, but it does have to be PC compatible.

Thanks!

Stage Management: Other / Wrangling the Childrens Chorus
« on: Nov 23, 2007, 05:06 pm »
I'm the PSM for a production that will use a fairly large children's chorus.  I have one inexperienced ASM who will have his hands full and as far as I know I don't have a kid wrangler, so I'm going to have to punt.

In the past, I have to admit that I haven't had much luck relating to a children's chorus . . .I know I can't expect them to be adults because they aren't.  I wanted to ask the network's advice on working with a large group of kids while also dealing with the rest of the things that we as stage manager's do.

I wanted to ask them to bring something along to read or work on while they aren't onstage.  I also wanted some kind of very simple reward system (stickers, etc) for rehearsals, just for a little extra incentive.

Any thoughts or advice?

Employment / Conductors on an opera resume
« on: Sep 17, 2007, 12:14 pm »
Most of my work has been done in opera, and I've always included the Maestro in my resume with the director.  I'm considering taking the conductors off my resume, as it will save an incredible amount of space and I can reformat my resume.  However, I do lose some VERY famous conductors (and some not so famous) if I do this.  I can always put those important conductors names in my cover letter, but then I risk looking like I'm name dropping.  Thoughts?

Employment / Cruise Ship Recruiting Agencies
« on: May 21, 2007, 12:26 pm »
I just had an experience with an agency that recruits stage managers for Royal Carribean, etc.

I applied, they called me about three months later to set up an interview with the recruiting agency.  They had, during that time, lost my resume, so I resent it.

The interviewer did not call me on time, but someone else in the company called me two hours later to reschedule me for the following week, at which point I just passed on the interview entirely.  I felt like my time had been wasted, and I questioned the wisdom of having someone representing me who couldn't be bothered to call me on time.

Has anyone else had successes or failures dealing with these agencies?  Why not just apply with the cruise line directly?
