Employment / Telephone Interviews
« on: Apr 03, 2013, 10:44 am »
I recently had a phone interview for a PA position and for the duration of my conversation with the PSM my phone was cutting in and out and I had to run around my house to keep from dropping the call. I also had to ask the interviewer to repeat his questions several times because the connection was so poor. This is a job I feel perfectly suited to and although the connection was horrible, I feel that the interview went well. I am still concerned that I came across as distracted and do not want to miss out on this opportunity because of a technical issue. Is this something that anyone else has had to deal with and how can I make sure that the problem with the phone does not ruin my chances of moving on in the interview process or potentially being hired by the company?

Employment / ASM vs. PA
« on: Mar 31, 2013, 07:27 pm »
What is the difference between an Assistant Stage Manager and a Production Assistant?

I'm applying for a PA position and wanted to get a clearer idea of what I should expect. I have worked at theaters that use PAs as 2nd ASMs, but I'm not sure if this is standard operating procedure.

Introductions / Littlelammoth Introduction

Hello everyone!

My name is Amy and I'm an early career stage manager. I began working as an SM in college, dove right into a full-scale production of Godspell first crack out of the barrel as a mid-term project for a stage management class and never looked back. I worked steadily through the remainder of my college career on large scale musicals. Additionally, I was an SM for two summer children's theater productions and had my first professional summer stock experience working as an ASM. After college, I completed a Stage Management internship at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis and stayed on as a child supervisor for several months. At the conclusion of my internship, I moved back home and was able to stage manage a university production of The Glass Menagerie followed quickly by a community theater position where I worked as an SM on three consecutive shows in a three week period (one full-scale musical, one musical review and a one woman one act). My next adventure will be working as an ASM at The Lost Colony starting in early May.

I'm hoping to use SMNetwork as a tool for making connections and gleaning as much knowledge as I can from the many forums. It's my goal to spend some time traveling across the country from theater to theater to learn as much as I can from as many different sources as possible before settling down at a regional theater I can call home. Thank you for your time and I'm excited to see what comes of this!
