Tools of the Trade / Smart Watches
« on: Oct 29, 2017, 02:42 am »
Hey folks, question for the group out there and one to provoke some discussion.  On the subject of smart watches: how much have these made it into your rehearsal rooms and performances?

Have you adopted one as part of your work process?  What are the pros and cons?

How do you handle actors wearing them during rehearsal and what is their effect on the rehearsal process (e.g. distractions from notifications while in scene)?

The Green Room / Sunday BBQ
« on: Nov 07, 2016, 12:07 pm »
Not many off theatre topics in here lately, figured I'd change it up a bit and share my adventure into BBQ smoking yesterday.  I recently bought a charcoal smoker for my house and finally had an afternoon to dedicate to it yesterday.

Two 5lb chickens with a BBQ rub (dark brown sugar, kosher salt, ground coffee beans, ground black pepper, garlic powder, cinnamon, cumin, and cayenne pepper) and smoked with hickory and apple wood.  Smoker temps averaged between 220-235 and cooked the meat in about four hours.

Before and after pics below

Rubbed and ready to go on:

The Green Room / Italian Actor Brain Dead After Hanging
« on: Feb 07, 2016, 11:12 pm »
A sad story out of Italy.  It's tough to tell exactly what happened, but seems that the actor was solo and only one spectator.  The importance of good fight choreography can not be stressed enough.

The Green Room / Pet Peeve - Mobile Email Signatures
« on: Dec 04, 2015, 01:33 am »
Curious if anyone else has encountered this line (or something similar) at the bottom of a mobile email signature: "Sent from my mobile device, please excuse typos or brevity".

The typos - appreciate that, all good there.  But why are people asking me to excuse their brevity?  Brevity should be encouraged, not excused!  If you're filling your emails with superfluous statements that are irrelevant to the statements in your email, then you're wasting everyone's time.

OK, I feel better now.  Thanks for listening!

The Green Room / Working for Free
« on: Nov 24, 2015, 06:34 am »
This has been making the rounds on social media this month; I'm sure some of you have seen it already.

Watch What Happens When You Ask Non-Creative Professionals to Work for Free

This is geared more towards photography, but the premise is still exactly the same: the premise of asking non-creative professionals to work for free is laughed at.  However, in our industry it is accepted by some as a "necessary evil" or even as the norm.  I think this does a nice job at putting a satirical spin on the ridiculous nature of that premise.

Employment / Budgeting with Irregular Income
« on: Jul 08, 2015, 09:45 am »
Two ways to budget if you have an irregular income.  Could be helpful for the freelancers out there.

Any freelance SMs out there have other budgeting tips?

Link.

I know some folks have mixed feelings about TV/Movie stars stepping onto the stage, however I'm all for anything that brings positive attention and new audience members to the theatre.

As an aside - if you haven't read Confederacy of Dunces, I can't recommend it enough.  Absolutely hilarious.

The Green Room / Sean Avery...
« on: Nov 06, 2014, 09:38 am »
So, this happened.

A former athlete and lifetime hot mess with no training or experience can't cut it on stage?  I'm shocked, I tell you.  Just shocked.

Tools of the Trade / Typ.io - Font Matching

Typ.io recommends different font combinations that go well together aesthetically.  Another way to give your paperwork or website an extra design touch!

Tools of the Trade / SM App Price
« on: Mar 23, 2014, 10:24 am »
Further to this thread in the Intro's board, I thought it worthwhile to continue the discussion on the market for a fully-featured SM-specific app.

What would you pay for such an app for mobile/tablet devices?  What features would you require?  Vote in the poll above and debate your responses in this thread.

The Green Room / LINK: The Aggregation of Marginal Gains

It's amazing how quickly making improvements of 1% can add up.  Particularly interesting is the graph of change over time.

Miami Herald Article

A pretty cool and somewhat historic (very historic for South FL) venue; among other things hosted the US Premier of Waiting for Godot
