The Green Room / Kay

I know we don't say it enough, we get busy and focused on our personal lives, but thank you for what you've created here. There's nothing like SMNetwork out there anywhere, and it's all because I you.
THANK YOU!

Self-Promotion / Weird life transition
« on: Jun 30, 2016, 09:43 am »
This week I'm leaving the full-time job and going back to the freelance life I led back in 19-- while doing some traveling with the fiance's job on the weeks I don't have my son. Just finished three months of rehearsals and performances for Charlotte Squawks so I'm just now able to focus on getting the next gigs. After years of working I realized that, for me, several different types of work is better than one full-time job (reading "One Person/Multiple Careers" was helpful).
Not at the excited stage yet, but I'm hopeful  ;).

While I don't see this becoming the trend with every B'way musical, I think it's a good move on the producers' part.

Do you think this will change how people associated with new works negotiate their contracts?

Something tells me if the theater goes so far as to ban you, you did do something wrong.

Which leads to an interesting question...has anyone shown their dissatisfaction to a performer in the way as this light board op did?

Self-Promotion / Coraline

Coraline (musical version)
Children's Theatre of Charlotte, Charlotte NC

Going into tech tomorrow. This is nothing like the off-Broadway version where Coraline was played by a 54 year old woman and Other Mother was a man in drag. Lots of cool blacklight effects and hopefully a lot of creep factor. We're also doing a collaboration with the theatre dept at UNCC to include their students in all production aspects.

The Green Room / Smart Watch use in rehearsal
« on: Sep 02, 2015, 05:09 pm »
I thought I would purchase a smart watch for rehearsals in order to avoid looking at my phone - it can be a source of distraction and I'm hoping it will keep me from answering non-immediate texts and emails, since while in rehearsals I tend to also get questions regarding up to 4 shows.

Has anyone else integrated a smart watch into your arsenal?

The Green Room / ARTICLE: Career or children?

I know there's a couple of parents who are also SMs, what's your take? As a parent did you feel the pressure to choose or limit your choices? Have you worked somewhere that is childcare-friendly? Anti?

The Green Room / Patrons behaving badly
« on: Jul 10, 2015, 12:11 pm »
In honor (or horror) of the rash of patron atrocities this week, including this incident with Miss Patti: http://playbill.com/news/article/patti-lupone-addresses-audience-at-last-nights-shows-another-cell-phone-rings-353042 and this incident with this guy: http://www.playbill.com/news/article/weve-got-the-footage-audience-member-tries-to-use-stage-outlet-to-charge-phone-at-hand-to-god-352826, spill your experiences of patrons behaving badly. Nothing of the "oops I didn't realize I shouldn't do that" variety, but the flat-out "I'm well aware this is wrong but I'm going to do/say this anyway."

The Green Room / An in-the-round CGI Peter Pan

It was especially interesting to read that their 'backstage areas' are under the stage floor or on a small platform at the top of the tent.

Self-Promotion / When POTUS gives you a day off
« on: Apr 14, 2015, 04:57 pm »
Well, we HAD two shows scheduled for tomorrow, but POTUS gave us the day off instead. We can't even be in the same building. Guess I'm cleaning my house.

The Green Room / Odd legal stuff you've learned
« on: Feb 27, 2015, 10:27 am »
I had this occur during a rehearsal last month. I had always been told that if you don't have the rights to perform a song onstage that you can't use it. We were wanting to add a snippet of "Celebration" by Kool & The Gang into the end of a dance number; we checked with our resident A/V engineer to see if it fell into our existing licensing purchase (forgive me if I use the incorrect wordage). It didn't, and we would have had to pay extra in order to use it. BUT in the process we also learned that you can use any song at all so long as you change the words and make it clear that it's a parody, then it's free. I had no idea this was legal.
It made me wonder if anyone else had come across misconceptions about the legalities of certain aspects of our field and found them either untrue or found a giant loophole.

**Of course before taking any of our word for it, make sure you check with your theater's policies or legal department if necessary**
