Is anyone else going?

So I am reaching a point where I am consistently making weeks for 6 months of insurance, but not 12. I alternate time between corporate work, eq work, and AGMA work right now, so I don't see that changing right away. I'm looking for an option, mostly with prescription coverage, that might have some experience with my AGMA Plan B coffer. Anyone have any insight, or suggestions for where to look? Thanks!

Employment / Being a Reference
« on: Mar 14, 2013, 01:01 pm »
So I am interested in advice about being a reference. In particular, what do you guys do when someone asks you to refer them and you're not sure you want to?

Employment / Shortened Summer Season
« on: Dec 27, 2012, 09:15 pm »
This is kind of a specific question, but I'm sure you guys have some ideas! I am working on applying for union (AEA/AGMA) gigs for the summer, but this year I am in graduate school, so I am pulled out of commission from 7/29 to 8/10. This is right in the middle of the runs of a lot of summer stock I'm finding. A lot of places are taking my resume and saying it might not be a problem... but I know it hardly makes me a first choice. Anyone have experience either seeking out an earlier summer season, or piecing something together from pm-ing and/or one-offs to make your own summer season? Any tips would be so welcome!

Self-Promotion / Our Class at Theater J in DC
« on: Nov 01, 2012, 11:50 pm »
The show I am ASMing is closing this weekend, but we just got some press on huffington post! It's a pretty cool write up from a different perspective. The rest of the press is on my website under "blog" if you're interested!

Tools of the Trade / Comm Adaptors
« on: May 10, 2012, 10:29 am »
So this is a little specific, but I'm moonlighting for a webcasting company and I'm wondering if it's possible to buy (or build) an adaptor that would allow me to listen to the casts (we use 1/4 and 1/8 in, but going back and forth between those is easy) with my 4 pin telex comm headset. I wouldn't want/need to talk, just to listen. I can't find anything intended to be used as headphones that I like as much as my comm! I know we have some sound geeks on the board and I'm comfortable soldering if I can just throw the connectors together... but I'm a little too far out of my audio shop days to remember if I can do that. Anyone know if I can buy/make anything like this? Thanks in advance for any ideas!

The Hardline / AEA Application?
« on: Aug 21, 2011, 09:43 pm »
Quick question. I was offered my first AEA contract (woo!) and I accepted it, but I can't find the application on the website to submit to AEA. Obviously I'll call tomorrow if I can't locate it, but I was wondering if anyone had any insight as to where to find it. Thanks!

The Hardline / Going Equity 'Young'
« on: Jul 19, 2011, 10:22 am »
I couldn't find a thread that addressed my specific question, but please let me know if I missed one.

I'm in need of a little perspective from people on the other end of the decision to go AEA 'young', or not. Does anyone have anecdotal information about what happened to them when they went (or decided not to go) union in their early 20s?

Hi everyone! Welcome to the Students and Novice Stage Managers Board.

A little about me...
My name is Bridget Woodbury, I live in the DC area and I'm a full-time stage manager. I got my BA in Theater from the University of Maryland, College Park in May 2010, but I've been freelancing for about a year and a half. I've worked on Opera, fringe shows, mini-tours, equity pieces, concerts, lecture series, all-day symposiums, and a whole lot of theatre. Right now I work at the George Mason University Center for the Arts working primarily with classical concerts and small tours and rentals coming through, but I am able to fit in some freelance PM and SMing. I started stage managing when I was 14, so I have a lot of educational experience and I have a lot of perspective on starting young. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk about it!

About the board...
As with other boards, there are some posts stickied about high traffic topics, but there are a couple things here that are a little different. One of them is the Student SM Challenges, which PSMKay I will work on together. They're a great place to start posting if you're new to the boards!

There is also a new topic I'm starting. It's called the SMNet Meeting. It's not a chat, nor its it time sensitive, but it's a place where you can check in once a week (or more, or less) at your leisure, to vent or talk "out loud" about your show. The idea here is to replicate the weekly SM meetings that exist in some college SM programs. Since a lot of programs aren't big enough to have them in person, I'm trying to get a big 24/7 meeting going here! It's one of the things that helped me the most as I was learning and that I miss the most about graduating.

So that's a place without the pressure of starting a whole topic, which I know can be daunting! Please keep the facts and frustrations show/stage management related, but feel free to comment at any time.

Welcome to the board, and remember, everyone here was new once too!

Tools of the Trade / Books about presenting houses
« on: Nov 18, 2010, 08:00 pm »
So I recently started a full time gig at a presenting house as an asm and I'm looking to start learning a bit more about how tours function. Up to this point, most of my work has been in producing house theatre, so I'm trying to get up to speed. Can anyone recommend a book about presenting tours? I have a great one about production managing that doesn't quite delve deep enough. I'm especially looking to learn about advancing a show. Thanks!

Tools of the Trade / Light hang and focus
« on: Sep 13, 2010, 11:26 pm »
I don't know if this is quite the right place for this, but figured I'd give it a shot. I took a full time job that requires some overhire work and I have my first light hang in a long time coming up. I did a little bit of hanging and focusing in school, but not much and I was hoping for some reminders if anyone has any tips or tricks!

Tools of the Trade / Excel tips
« on: May 05, 2010, 01:39 am »
So I'm graduating from college imminently and I have some time that I want to devote to learning Excel. Basically what I'm looking for are some Excel hints. What are interesting things that you've learned to do in Excel that you find particularly helpful or interesting?

Tools of the Trade / Running Shoes
« on: Jan 18, 2010, 09:57 pm »
I couldn't find this covered elsewhere, but perhaps I missed it. It's been a while since I've run a show backstage and I've discovered that I don't have any crew appropriate shoes. What kind of shoes do you wear backstage? I'm particularly interested in all black shoes. Thanks!

The Hardline / Dancers' Union
« on: Jun 26, 2009, 03:14 am »
I'm not sure if this is the right topic for this, but is there a union for dancers? I tried to google it, but had a hard time locating what ever the dance equivalent is. Thanks!

Employment / Abbreviations on Resumes
« on: Jun 06, 2009, 03:25 pm »
I'm updating my resume and I have it down to about one page, but it only fits on one page if I abbreviate stage manager and assistant stage manager as SM and ASM. For those of you doing hiring, would you rather see the abbreviation or the resume going slightly over a page?
Thanks!
