Self-Promotion / Hugo Boss at 4 WTC
« on: Sep 12, 2014, 09:58 pm »
I just completed the latest New York Fashion Week.  I did a bunch of fun shows but the highlight was definitely Hugo Boss at 4 WTC.  The view was more than amazing, the building team is awesome and I got the best swag.

I am in the process of updating my resume and have come upon a question.

My current job is as a teacher for a professional training program.

My resume is currently divided into categories:

Circus, Theatre, Opera etc

What can I title my new section?  I am afraid to use the term Educational because I think it will end up looking like I am a student.

Thoughts?

I have recently come across the term "Shout Check" in relation to preparing for a performance and I have not heard this term before.  I think it's a UK term.  Does anyone know what this is?  (I am fairly certain is does not involve actually shouting)

Thanks!

Edit to subject line-Rebbe

Self-Promotion / My 15 Seconds of Fame
« on: Jun 05, 2012, 11:42 pm »
Recently, at Voyage de la Vie, we did a special feature with the host of the local morning show, AMLive (ChannelNewsAsia).  He was filming a series of segments that involved him learning various jobs very quickly and then doing them for a day.  The series was called "Crash Course."

The last segment was ours and he came to learn how to be a circus performer.  We shot over 2 days including training, make-up and costumes and, of course, his appearance in the show.

Here is a link to the youtube clip of the whole feature.  I appear in it 3 times.  Twice just walking in the background in a colorful skirt- during training around the time that he gets new shoes and then in the make-up room.  And then I cue him and the other performers to go onstage.

Here is a second link to a 15 second "behind the scenes" clip of me and the host marveling over an acrobat's abs.

The Green Room / Travel Advice: I'm going to Tokyo
« on: May 14, 2012, 11:51 pm »
Hey everybody, I have 4 days annual leave that I have to use before July, so I have just booked myself 6 days in Tokyo!

I've been to Japan before but not Tokyo and looking for advice of where to go and what to see while I'm there.

So if you've been to Tokyo, give me some ideas, please!  I'm willing to splurge on one or two "must-do" expensive things, but need to stay reasonably budget-conscious.

Thanks in advance.

Self-Promotion / Voyage de la Vie
« on: May 10, 2011, 09:28 am »
Hey all.  I guess I kind of fell off the planet for a while.

I finished my contract with Dragone (The House of Dancing Water in Macau) in November and then took some time to travel around Asia while slowly searching for a new job.

I recently started my new job as the Stage Manager for Voyage de la Vie at Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore.

It is my first show using the British structure for the Stage Management team.  I find it interesting to be the head of department, but not the designated primary show caller.

So far, I am loving Singapore and enjoying the show.

The Green Room / Any other crafters out there?
« on: Jul 25, 2010, 01:33 am »
I know there are several of you out there that knit and crochet.  I am an obsessed crocheter (hooker).  I am make mostly hats and amigurumi.  My current trend (read: obsession) is with Sock Monkeys.  I just can't stop making them (crochet though, not using real socks).

What about you?  What are you making?

Also- I recently discovered a great resource for the crafty among us.  www.ravelry.com

It's a huge site with billions of members from all over the world.  I am totally addicted to looking at pictures of other peoples projects.

Here are some pictures of my two most recent projects:

Employment / CV help
« on: Nov 28, 2008, 09:30 am »
So I am being asked to create a CV. Not
a 1 page resume, but a full-career spanning CV. I need some advice on formatting, please.

Do I include dates? Director names? Do I list each show if I did a whole season? Do I list in simple chronological order or group by type of production (dance, theater, opera)? Do I list cities?

If anyone has any hints or even a sample CV, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Tools of the Trade / SM uses for CAD Software
« on: Jun 10, 2008, 07:17 pm »
Mod note: this is a split from the second half of JoshAnderson's post in "What Software do you Use" - kmc307

I notice a lot of people use AutoCAD or equivalent programs in their work.

What exactly do you use them to create? Any examples you can share?

I'm lame and usually just make my ground plans via photoshop; however, I can see how AutoCAD would be much more accurate!

Thanks,

- Josh

1- It is more accurate.
2- Most designers create the plans in a CAD program.  Usually I can get them to send it to me.  Which means I don't need to re-draw the groundplan. I can select what I want and copy and paste.
3- I use it to communicate changes or specifications from rehearsal/ director to the designers (set and lights).  I do this by marking areas, highlighting dimensions or moving things around.
4- My real real reason though is for taping out the floor.  No need to print groundplan and measure with a scale rule.  CAD has a dimension feature and I just have to draw a dimension line between two points to know the measurements.

Attached is one page of an example of Reason #3.  I did a play that had about 12 scenes and the director often changed her mind about where furniture and moving scenery should play.  I created these shift plots from the designer's originals and was able to keep all parties up to date.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Good Advice for All
« on: May 02, 2008, 12:11 am »
My little brother is in the process of getting his MBA in Sports Management and wrote the following to a high school student asking for advice.  He copied me on the email and I wanted to share his words with you all.  Just replace the word "sports" with "theater."

" - Most importantly, in sports it is all about who you know.  You must have connections inside of sports teams to have a shot at getting the exciting positions.  You should do everything in your power to get to know people who can help further your career.  Make the effort to develop relationships, and keep them over the years.

- Passion is not enough.  Everyone who you're competing against is passionate about sports and wants to work in it for the same reasons you do.  You must turn your passion into outstanding work and stand out above others who will be trying their best to stand out above you.  How do you stand out?  See the points below.

- Always have a smile on your face and make it clear that you really love what you're doing.  This means that if you are doing bitch work (like moving boxes or standing outside during the game doing customer service instead of getting to watch) you still need to smile.  It's at these moments where having a smile gets noticed.

- Do everything to the best of your ability.  If you are moving boxes, do it well.  My first day working for the Gators, I moved over 100 packets of posters from one storage area to another in 100 degree heat.  One semester later I was promoted to leading the on-court promotions during Men's Basketball.  I made this jump by doing every assignment my bosses gave me to my best ability.  They responded by adding to my responsibilities little by little until I had a position that many people wanted.

- Ask for more responsibilities and then deliver better than expected.  As you gain credibility, you will get a lot of opportunities to take on additional work."

(I'm so proud of him.)

Completely off post topic, but I have had an amazing number of actors (I mean actresses) forget to wear panties.

How do you forget?  I really want to know.
