The Green Room / Road Life Advice
« on: Dec 28, 2009, 03:00 pm »
I am about to go out on my first tour!  I know there are a few of you on here who have done quite a bit of touring and was wondering if you have any advice about life on the road.  I'm actually going out as an assistant electrician (don't hate me, just needed a break from sming for a while), so I'm more interested in general tips on how to stay sane when the days get long, the locals don't know the difference between SR and SL, or etc...  Thanks!

Employment / Mingling With Other Departments
« on: Dec 14, 2009, 12:12 pm »
We all know the recession has hit the theatre world hard.  For those of us not lucky enough to have a resident position with a company, jobs can come farther apart.   I was just curious if any of you have found yourselves picking up jobs in other departments but still within the theatre.  For example, I took a four week job as the wardrobe mistress for the Nutcracker to get me through December while I'm in between contracts.  I also work over-hire for my I.A.T.S.E local.  Any of you ever do something similar?  Any of you ever thought about broadening your training in another area such as electrics or carpentry?

Employment / Cruise Line Recommendations
« on: Jul 28, 2009, 01:47 pm »
I would really like to work on a cruise ship in the fall and was wondering if any of you can recommend good companies to apply for or ones that should be avoided.  I've been doing some research online and so far Princess, Carnival, and Royal Caribbean are the ones that stood out to me.

Any other advice about cruise line work overall?  I'm interested in more of a general stagehand position than SMing because I want to build up my technical experience (specifically in lighting) but don't have enough knowledge yet to apply for an electrics only job.

Thanks!

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / MORALE: Long Runs
« on: Dec 19, 2008, 09:01 am »
Tonight I will to my 53 performance of White Christmas since November 11th.  (No I'm not working on the B'way production but at a regional dinner theatre).  Most of these have been 8 show weeks but some had as many as 11.  There was one two-week stretch with 22 shows in a row and no days off.  We close on New Years Eve so I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel but I'm wondering how others of you handle long runs with grueling schedules? (Or long runs period) How do you keep the show fresh and the actors motivated?  How do you keep from getting personally worn down which can in turn effect company moral?  I've worked very hard to stay on top of this show but some days the very last thing I wanted to do was go to the theatre.

Thoughts?

Employment / Two sided resume?
« on: Jan 08, 2008, 06:07 pm »
Here's a question along the lines of 1-2 page resumes. Would back and front printing be acceptable?  For example, I've got my resume down to one page with the exception of my references.  Could I put something like "see reverse side for references" at the bottom of the 1st page and then list them on the back?

For those of you who find yourselves digging through piles of resumes periodically, I was wondering if there is something besides a person's actual experience/qualifications that can make an application stand out, i.e. the layout or format of the document itself.  I was looking at the different examples in the resume browser and while they were, for the most part, variations on a theme, there were some pretty big differences in organization.  There's probably no "best" design, but what is advantageous or recommendable?

I know the basics... keep it to one page, put contact info at the top references at the bottom, experience, education, and special skills in the middle, but is there anything else that can make a resume catch someone's eye- font size, style etc...

And before anyone asks, I have done a search and looked at the other resume topics on the board, but they seemed to address content more than layout.

I have seen a couple of threads that talk about tech week stress, but I was wondering how others deal with what I call adrenaline withdrawal; that is, the emotional let down that comes after a show closes. True, there are some productions that you can't wait to kiss goodbye, but more often, I find closing a show to be bittersweet.  You've just spent that last however may weeks expelling tons of energy (emotional, physical, mental, etc... ) into something that no longer exists. You've made new friends, and (hopefully) had a good time, but you longer get to go and work with those people every night.

For me, the first couple days after everything has been "put to bed" are the hardest. Even if I don't miss the show, I often find it hard to get reoriented to "normal" life.  The things that got put off during the run (family issues, homework, misc. personal stuff) suddenly come rushing back at me when I'm the most tired and the least able to handle them.

Do other people have any experience with this, or am I the only one? Any suggestions for making the transition from rehearsals/performances five+ nights a week to no show at all smoother?

College and Graduate Studies / Has Anyone Ever Worked at ATL?
« on: Mar 24, 2006, 02:06 pm »
The college I am hoping to go to would allow me the opportunity to do an internship at Actors Theater of Louisville. I was wondering if anyone has ever worked there before. I have several friends who've said it would open a lot of doors and be good for networking, but I don't know anyone who's had first hand experience there. Any information would be very much appreciated!
