Employment / Re: Needing a cover for 2 shows
« on: Mar 03, 2020, 01:55 pm »
I have the same issue! Fortunately, my production manager was very easy to talk to about it and helped me find my replacement (my brother is getting married). Having open communication is key. I knew when I signed the contract that I was going to miss a Sunday matinee for the wedding. So its written into the paperwork that I signed.

I am not on an Equity contract, its a small theatre here in Cleveland that I am doing the show at and my replacement is someone who has stage managed at this venue before.

I am going to pay her out of my pocket.

My suggestion is to have a person in mind when you talk to your producers. Knowing that you trust this person, will only help!

Employment / Re: Production photos on Website

Kay,
Yes, I deliberately chose a clean and functional website lay out. Not many colors and easy to read. I am designing this site through school and a class so I am comparing my own site to a scene designer and lighting designer; which is obviously going to be a different set up. Compared to their sites, mine looks a bit bland; but my stage manager brain sees less distractions and easily found information. I appreciate all of your input and I have been researching other stage manager websites. I have also added my C.V. and teaching philosophy to different pages on the site to encompass all that I do in the realm of leadership. I haven't seen much about pictures and they do tend to be background images and not specifically in the forefront of the page.

I dont know what I would do without you guys! Thank you!

Thank you for your input, I'll take a look at the site! This is a tad bit confusing, you would think it would be easier to market yourself.

I think I might know your ASM! Is Eric Mayer working on that show with you?

Most of my work as been educational, so the archives are okay to use as long as we give credit to the photographer. Do you think the photos are necessary? I added paperwork samples instead, which I do think are more important. However, I do not really know what to do with the production photos.

Not only do I use this book for myself, I also teach from it. I have read the 8th, 9th and now 10th edition cover to cover. Recently the chair of our department retired and handed me a first edition of the book! Its probably completely out of date, but I love that I will always have the first and the last edition! I can not tell you all how important this book as been to my education. Thank you for the post!

The Green Room / Re: The Stage Manager's Nightmare
« on: Apr 14, 2015, 05:52 pm »
I have a recurring dream before every opening night. I can't find my headset! I get to the booth (the booth for whatever show I am working with) and its just not there. No way to communicate at all to anyone! Funny thing is, I usually wake up to my bed in complete disarray as I must be searching for my headset in my sleep!

It happens EVERY opening night.

Employment / Production photos on Website
« on: Apr 14, 2015, 05:31 pm »
Hello all!
Im not sure if this is the correct thread, but it does go under employment and marketing yourself...

As I finish my professional website, I am still confused if I should put production photos on the website. I have worked on usual academically done shows, so most people will know the size of the cast (which is what I imagine the photos are for). Do you think production photos help? Any suggestions on what I should look for in photos that I could possibly put on my website?

Thank you so much!

Fortunately, I only had a 10 person cast, so it wasnt horrible, but how am I to trust an ASM backstage when they barely know the show? Rehearsal is used for the stage managers too! We practice the scene changes, the prop hand offs, an ASM needs to be there for the beginning.. As well as a stage manager!

Introductions / Re: Theatre in a NCAA Division 1 Town

Welcome Bob!
This is a great place to research paperwork! Good choice!

My favorite cast was "Our Town" and we had 24 people in it! Definitely my most favorite show ever!

Welcome again!

The show I am currently stage managing, my ASM didn't come in until tech week. As I have a lot of educational experience, I was used to having my ASM during the entire run. I found myself a bit frazzled when I was trying to do line notes and blocking and change scenes all by myself. I think stage management is a team! From beginning to end, I felt like my ASM didn't know the show enough to run the backstage. So I cant even imagine being the SM and starting at tech week. I have done week long shows where it all sorta comes together in the week, but we were all there for the whole time. It might be more normal for an ASM, but for a SM, they are needed from the beginning.

Thank you! I am about to graduate with my MFA and heading toward professional theatre, however, I am worried with my education vs experience, I wont be considered for internships/apprenticeships because I am over qualified. I don't have much professional experience so I need that year of interning (regardless of my education). Do you run into this issue? How would you handle a resume with a lot of educational experience but not so much professional experience?

Employment / Re: Summer Stock

It sounds like you have the same level of experience that they are looking for. They mention age in some job posting to suggest experience (is what I notice). I say apply. You'll know after an interview if you fit in with the company.

If you need the experience, apply! I am 31 and in graduate school doing our Summer Rep Series. Yes, I am a bit older than the undergrads, but the experience I am getting overshadows any age issues. Summer stock is a lot of fun and a lot of hard work. Do it now while your bills are low. Not to mention the contacts you will make!
