The Green Room / Re: Sleeping in your theatre
« on: Mar 11, 2013, 11:31 pm »
At my Univrsity the stage managers used to have an office with a big comfy couch. Many of us would slip away during the day and take a nap up there. Now, a professor has taken over that office and all the students have resorted to the Green Room couches.

Agreed.
but im just researching more about this so I can know more. I saw the forum in the Green room about What union would suit stage managers better and There was an unanimous agreement that Equity is the best fit. But i was still curious about why people would think otherwise, and want to know more about the other unions.

This is really helpful
I started theater/stage managment in college and feared that my lack of experiance would be my downfall, but reading this has made me a bit less scared.

Its a side question for my capstone and also I am generally curious.
I'm trying to figure out Why stage managers are apart of Equity and not apart of a different union like the DGA or IATSE.
I figured I could go through their rules/ guidleines to be able to compare and contrast the unions with stage managers needs but, alas, there is no rule book.

To MORE RESEARCH! ;D

Does anyone know where I can find IATSE and possibly the DGA rulebook, guidlines, handbook, or Whatever they have?

I'm curious to find out the differences between the rules and Equity's

Homework Help / Re: Deadline 3.22.13: Stage Managers and Equity
« on: Mar 02, 2013, 02:17 pm »
Wow! Thank you everyone so much for all of this information! I now have history of the AEA, Why people join equity, and found some things about stage managers and different unions.

But, I am missing one tiny bit of information I find crucial to this assignment.
When did Stage managers become apart of the AEA?
I continue reading about the strike, negotiations with the Syndicate, and how the union has  supported the actors and stage managers, but nothing about how or why stage managers are apart of equity.

I feel my information is beginning to allude that SMs and Actors were joined at the beginning of AEA, but since I dont have information to prove or disprove that theory, I'm somewhat stuck.

Where stage managers in mind when the actors rallied up in 1913? Where they brought into equity after the association was created?  Is it because actors and stage managers work so closely together they should be in the union together? Or could it be that the director needed someone in equity to communicate with that was not an actor?

Homework Help / Deadline 3.22.13: Stage Managers and Equity

Attending school at: Southern Oregon University

Training level: Undergrad
Project due date: 3.22.13

Questions:
I'm a students at SOU and I am working on my capstone. I'm trying to find sources for journals and articles in which talk about stage managers and equity. The question I am trying to answer is: Why are stage managers apart of Equity?

I know they play a huge part of any production, but Stage Managers have more practical abilities/uses then designers or actors. I know stage managing is an art in its own way I just want to be able to find information about stage managers and equity.

If anyone can guide me to sources or other websites I would much appreciate it.

Doing more research I have come to 2 significant questions that may help with my question.
Where can I find/ what is the history of stage managers? (generally around 1980s, when the SMA was created)

what are the major benefits of being an equity stage manager? i understand they will have more stability finding a job and they are able to voice their wants during meetings, but what else?

Tools of the Trade / Any Stage Managers use LiveScribe Pens?
« on: Feb 25, 2013, 12:41 am »
I'm a college student and have been using the LiveScribe pen and books for my classes and one day while I was in Shakespeare class I thought about using it for rehearsals and notes. What I love about the pen is that it holds all the information you write down and when you plug it into a computer, BAM! You have photocopies of what you wrote on your computer. I also know there is an app you can buy with the pen that will change it all to text.
The only downside I see is that you HAVE to use the special paper/notes books in order for it to work, but with something like this pen would you as a Stage manager use it for a production use?

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Mentorship Program
« on: Feb 24, 2013, 07:24 pm »
I would love to have a mentor in Stage Management, I came late into the game as a theater student (Sophmore year of college) and when I decided to pursue Stage management as a career, i soon found out that my school had one class for this area of expertise and it was from the scenic design professor. I have pretty much taught myself and picked some tricks and forms from Stage managers I PAed and ASMed. As much as I enjoy the hands on learning on ones own, with a career like this i would love to find someone I could constantly look up too as I come into my own.

My school had this problem. We bought several e-cigs and took out the nicotine in it. It worked, however the smoke wasn't to noticeable, but it looked and acted like a cigarette. The smoke is actually just vapor and by taking the nicotine packs out its not harmful to anyone.

Hello I'm Veronica!
I'm a soon-to-be graduate at Southern Oregon University. I am graduating with the emphasis and stage management and was referred to this website from an OSF SM. I am in the process of writing my capstone and was told that this website would be of good use to me. I've slowly roamed the website a couple times and am now excited I am becoming a part of this community, eventually get some questions answered, and make connections with other stage managers
