So talent shows are as popular as ever and sooo much fun to put on. Does anyone have anything that they like to use to organize the chaos?

So i know that they are really pricey, but i love the style that Leveger brings to office supplies.  Including their take on buisness cards.  They offer 3x5 cards with your info printed on them, buisness card as well as a utilitarian note card like Mac Calder mentioned.  Surely people will think twice before they throw it away, and it has your name on it . . .

Anyway heres a link so that you can check them out for your self.

Employment / Re: Necessary in a resume?
« on: Jul 05, 2011, 05:09 pm »
Remember, the resume is the hook to get the interview, the interview is the hook to get the job.

Its all about standing out in a crowd, what sets you apart.  In my primary job field, education, there may be 500 to a 1000 job applications, with attached resumes, cover letters, letter of reference, etc.  How do u stand out in that crowd??  Even though i got a job, it remains a mystery to me what I did to be the one choosen.

Well, its also about the employers needs and the employers standards - because they truely aren't looking at the same things that you or i do.  Just like has been discussed in other threads - the stage manaer's brain functions differently than other peoples, well so do human resource managers or whoever does the hiring.  When we ask people in food service, chefs and such (since foods is one of the things that i teach), what skills they want people to have - the answer always amazes us.  Its not knife skills or cookign skills - they are willing to train and teach that- its teamwork, work ethic, problem solving, being on time.

To extend the metaphore that Matthew started, you have to bait the hook with attractive bait, not just the lures that you like otherwise noone will bite.

Always looking for things to make my job easier, and i found this in an old costume designers textbook that I was reading the other day.  Could be supremely usefull if you're not the costume person but need to do the shopping for that person.

Working with the kids that I work with (middle schoolers) I often have the same problem.  Ive given some thought as why it occures.  Heres my thoughts as to the psudopsychology. It is the opposite of what the actors are trying to acheive (suspension of disbelief), its a failure to create an environment in which the actors can achieve a level of suspension of belief.  That is to say that they can't suspend the belief that if the cellphone isnt in their posession at all times the world will come to a screaching halt.
I also think that it is an extension of this their self importance, the principals in our cast have no problem walking away from their phones for a couple hours; the members of the chorus are the ones who shove them all kinds of places so that they can take them onstage with them.
Also, its kinds sad how important these little devices have become to us.  I mean I lost my phone for like 5 minutes last week . . . well you all understand, everyone has had that sinking feeling of panic; only to find it safe and sound in the bottom of your bag or the pocket that your turned inside out like five times, but apparently werent thourough enough.

Tools of the Trade / Re: OCR software

I have and use TextBridge 9.0.  It can source from any scanner and will send the recognized data to the program of your choice.  I originally got it with a Xerox MFC and when I replaced it, got an updated version of the program.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Google Sites - The Glass Menagerie

Was so impressed and inspired by what I saw on your link, that I talked our production team into using a google site. We have it live and r using it for our production of Metaphasia.  If you are interested in checking it out it is at.  It works out well because we can each edit it independently.  As long as we respect each others space and edits it works out so well. Increasing communications between the production, directing team and the actors is what we see as the strength of this tool.

These dance notation sheets are a variation on the blocking sheets that my director refuses too use  (long story, we won't go there).  It allows you to draw in the dancers as xs, os, triangels, squares, etc. and still maintain relative stage position.  The four sheets are all variations on the same theme.

I am placing some forms in the uploaded forms section  (follow the link http://smnetwork.org/forum/index.php/topic,5411.0.html)
that I think might be useful.  They are a variation on blocking sheets that my director refuses too use  (long story, we won't go there).  It allows you to draw in the dancers as xs, os, triangels, squares, etc. and still maintain relative stage position.

Ok, "so early trending in the the polling indicates" . . . 4 to 1 is still pretty significant, if the trending holds true then the answer will be no.  I think that most of the arguments for not banning it are pretty persuasive and feel certain that they will hold a lot of weight with most of the membership.  I should clarify my previous remark by saying that it was intended only to second the notion of creating yet another board; one that could be usefull for student members and maybe everyone else too.  Active professionals are their greatest resource, and we wouldn't turn them away if they came to us and asked to learn from us while we were working in our real venues (as opposed to our virtual one).

Point of information: How many of the membership is student members?  Wouldn't that skew the polling numbers??  Just asking.

11
Since the trend with the polling seems to be an overwhelming no, I think that we should come up with a solution the the problem that meets everyone's needs.  I think that I agree with nmno, I think that a Classroom board in the offstage section would be a great place for students to ask and have their questions answered; also that way everything is in a centralized location and no one needs to repeat themselves.

I love the idea of the SM and/or the ASM knowing some basic sewing . . . for repair purposes; and having a sewing machine warmed up and ready to go back in the dressing rooms.  Aaah - to dream  . . .   But seriously as some one who handles such things on a regular basis, a seam repair should take a matter of minutes - 5 at the most for an novice.  The bigger problem is to find a machine and someone who is willing to complete the remair.  I've lost more pants, belts, shirts and other articles of clothing due to wardrobe malfunctions than I can count . . . and actors never return anything.  I now have a supply of spares just incase.  It's community theater, so does the costumer do anything else with the production . . . like lights, front of the house, props?  Is there a way for them to stay through the entire production just incase they are needed?  As far as the SM, they are where the buck stops and the blame too - you did what was reasonable in the situation and for someone to tell you otherwise is unproffessional and uncalled for.

If you have seen those magazine holders like the one in the attachment, you can put the script anywhere you want in the 3 ring binder that you have all of your other materials in, it doesn't have to be religated to a pocket like it very often is.

Anyone got any thing that they used for deck cues?  I think that I like this one, but time will tell.

And that's where the tread started, with one of the costume forms that I use in our productions.  Being backstage can be a very Taoist experience, so let me quote Lao Tzu:

Act without acting;
conduct affairs without trouble of them;
taste what has no flavour;
consider the small as great and the few as many;
repay injury with kindness.

Anticipate difficulties while things are still easy;
achieve great things with small beginnings.

All difficult things arise from something easy;
All great things begin with something small.

Therefore:

The Sage, without great effort, is able to accomplish the greatest things.

He who lightly promises will keep little faith.
He who thinks things easy will find them difficult.

Therefore:

The Sage takes care even in what seems easy, and so never has any difficulties.

I'm just saying that it is everyone's job to help everyone else on the production, and I don't consider it an imposition to have someone say, "Hey, I found this form (on this really great forum that I'm part of) and think that it might be helpful to us with our production to use it.  Use it or not, but it's somewhere to start."
