College and Graduate Studies / Transferring to Canada
« on: Jun 04, 2010, 05:01 pm »
Hey all. Although I'm very happy here at my current school, I'm looking into transferring to a university in Canada for personal reasons. I've been researching on my own, but I seem to get lost under the heaps of information available online. I was wondering if anyone here could help out with some questions I had, since my knowledge of Canadian universities is severely lacking.

1) Are there any big universities in Canada with a theatre design & production program? I'm hoping to find a program that's specific to theatre production, but not a sole SM degree, and also has a liberal arts component to it. The only major university I could find was UBC. Anyone know anything about UBC's theatre design & production program?

2) I want to go into SM-ing dance primarily, although I would still love to do opera, musical, and plays. Are there places in Canada where dance is specially strong?

Thanks!

I ended up choosing Michigan, and as Mitch said above, I wouldn't trade it for anything else. The professors and classes are fantastic, the liberal arts portion of the curriculum is extremely strong, there are lots of chances to get involved in shows, but I think the other students really define the Michigan experience. They're simply all fantastic people, and I definitely recommend looking into Michigan if you're looking into Theatre Design & Production!

Remember, Yale School of Drama is the graduate school. Yale College only offers Theater Studies, which is a general study of theater, not technical theater specific. Also, I'm under the impression that it's more geared towards actors/directors, but I could be wrong.

University of Michigan - Ann Arbor also has a Theater Design & Production department, which I will be going to this fall.

College and Graduate Studies / Northwestern vs. UMich?
« on: Mar 31, 2009, 06:03 pm »
Hey everyone! So college decisions are out, and my final available choices are Northwestern University and University of Michigan. For Northwestern, I was accepted as a BA Theater major in the School of Communications. At UMich, I was accepted for the BFA Theatre Design & Production student. As I don't live in the U.S., there's no way for me to visit these colleges.

Are there any students at Northwestern or UMich here that could give me some insight into the programs? Or anyone else who graduated from either school? Thanks :)

Can't find the edit button. Hm.

Anyway, I forgot to add what type of college I'm looking for. I'm looking for a college where I can build great connections for the theatre world after college. I'm also hoping to minor in Biology. And as for the student body, I'm looking for one where I can get lost in the crowd, but still have a close group of friends, and be involved in school clubs. Also, I'm of course looking for chances to help out with any backstage on and off campus, the more experience the better!

Employment / Re: Where do I begin?

Thank you everyone for the great advice. It looks like volunteering in theatre/internships will be invaluable during college. And I knew the visa would be a problem... Guess I'll have to figure some way out.

Actually I had a question related to that. How exactly does SMing as a side job work? I believed that SM would be so time-consuming that it would be impossible to do as a side job. I definitely wouldn't mind doing a main job to support myself until I can SM full-time without worrying about finances too much.

I also have to serve a 2 year mandatory military service within the next 10 years. I planned to do it after my sophomore year at college, then return 2 years for my junior year. Is this bad for networking and creating contacts, which I know are vital in this field?

Thanks!

Hey everyone, thanks for all the amazing advice. From what I gathered, the trainer is a friend of a student at our school, and was willing to trust us with the monkey.

So here's what happened: the guy had to suddenly leave the country due to personal issues back home. Turns out we didn't get a live monkey after all. We used a puppet instead. I'd like to believe that the theatre gods answered my prayers. :)

But thanks for all the advice! It's great knowledge to have, and the next time I'm faced with an animal problem on stage, I'll know what to do. I love this board :)

Employment / Where do I begin?

Hey all. I'm a senior in high school, about to go off to college to study technical theatre in college, in hopes of becoming a stage manager or a production manager on Broadway.

The thing is... I don't know what to expect! I come from a country where theatre is practically nonexistent and I'm moving to the States to pursue my dreams. But after my 4 years of college, I have no idea what to do or what to expect.

So what happens once you graduate college? Will I start out with as a PA on Broadway, or is that too much of a stretch already? What kind of jobs did you use to get by in the earlier years, if any? How long until you can finance yourself just on your stage managing job? Will there be any companies willing to sort out my visa issue? Are there people out there who are actually crazy enough to date us stage managers? ;)

I'm sorry if these questions are stupid! I love stage managing with all my heart, but I just want an idea of what I should be expecting after college.

Thanks!

Another '09er! :) I think you have a great list of colleges. One advice I want to suggest is to not take too much consideration into the USNews rankings. The college you choose should be the one that you think is right for you, not a bunch of people who have nothing better to do than rank colleges in questionable ways, especially when the arts is a priority for the student.

Good luck at finding the college for you!

So it turns out the handler CAN'T be backstage during the play. In fact, he can't be there at all! He can only drop the monkey off and pick it up each night.

The director still wants to have a live monkey in the show. Guess we'll just have to work with it.

Wish me luck you guys :/

I could have kissed...

the cast when they gave me an standing ovation at the end of the final dress rehearsal when I walked in from backstage, and someone gave a speech. It's all a blur, because I was practically bawling from all the emotions I had been dealing with for the entire process.

my amazing crew, when they gave me a rose as a thank-you after the musical. It's ridiculous; I should be thanking THEM for everything. They had been nothing but loyal and helpful. Ugh I'm going to miss them.

It's amazing, because I never seek a "thank you" since I think of SM as a behind-the-scenes job. It's really special when someone does thank you.

Thanks everyone for their advices! I talked to the director, and told him flat out that I will not let a monkey onstage without a handler backstage, and he assured me that a handler will be backstage and will be with the monkey whenever the monkey's not onstage. Whew.

Now all I have to do is tell the actors NOT to play/feed/touch/annoy the monkey. Hopefully they'll be able to control themselves. And have a chat with a handler about what to do in serious situations, i.e. the monkey starts freaking out onstage.

Oh the woes of being an SM. But that's why I love it :)

I'll keep you guys updated! Show's in two weeks!

No, I don't mean high school students ;) Our high school's putting on "Inherit the Wind" soon, and there's a monkey in the script. I simply assumed that we would use a puppet or something, but I was told today that we would be using a live monkey.

Cue major freak out.

I've never had to work with animals before, and it's quite honestly a bit frightening. Are there any tips for working with animals in the play?
