I just created this Dance Notation form for "Comedy of Errors" here at Shake&Co, because our Choreographer didn't have an Assistant and he was creating most things in the room with feedback from the director. I wanted our Dance Captain, PSM and LD to have common language, so I created this template and then edited it according to the counts of the dance and whether or not there were lyrics. You can see how I handled multiple tracks in both examples, and how I used lyrics not counts for Whitney Houston.

Thank you all for the advice! I ended up writing a very gracious thank you note, and next time I'll consider incorporating some of your clever tactics. I am also on the hunt for a new home to relocate to (Houston? Seattle? Denver?), while making the best use of my network to find work thats more local and accessible.

Hi All,

I recently applied for a season-long gig with a ballet company on the West Coast and worked really hard on the application. I knew this company would get a lot of applications, as I had applied last year, so I made sure to send my materials on the same day they posted the job.

I just heard back that due to the number of applicants, they are only interviewing locals. :(  What's most upsetting about this to me is that they did not include this little detail in the job posting. I did make sure to include in my cover letter that I'd be willing to relocate to their town ASAP and that I had sufficient resources to do so.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? How did you respond? Unfortunately, I was trying to use this job as an opportunity to gain experience in ballet, so I can't exactly send them an exhaustive list of how well-suited I am to the job due to prior experience.

Would love some advice if anyone has some to spare.

Although that sounds like a pretty hellish situation - DON'T LOSE HOPE.

I stepped into a stage management position at my college my freshman year and had no real mentoring except for the stage management manuals that I found on Amazon. They had never had a stage manager who attended to anything more than making sure that people arrived and just barely covered the backstage with a stage hand or two. Now I'm doing summer stock at Santa Fe Opera and going to grad school at Rutgers in the fall.

Definitely learn your own blocking notation technique if you want to move towards a major. You don't have to change everything, but you should definitely create the culture at your school of the SM being at rehearsals (even if you get an ASM). Building should not be your problem - it should be your technical directors/carps problem. If you get notes about it, pass it off immediately, you clearly have bigger things to worry about.

The craziest thing I've ever read has been Santa Fe Opera's Housing Procedure: "You must move in {to their leased apartments} only the day before the date stated on your contract"

There was no way in hell I was moving to Santa Fe from Connecticut one day before I started work, so I smoozed up to the housing manager and managed to get approval for moving over a few days early instead.

Has anyone had to fulfill a crazy obligation like that?

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Rutgers - facilities?

I just got accepted to Rutgers and accepted their offer - we might be classmates!

Anyway, I went to Rutgers and interviewed with Carol Thompson and got a tour of their facilities. They have a ginormous personal stock (they don't rent, everything their students make they save), a flexible black box space, a permanent procenium, a SM student office (with computer, fridge, large table and shelves), a great costume shop, a decent metal and wood shop. If you have some specific questions, please PM me, because otherwise I'll just ramble...

I got 4 set models!  ;D One of them was the original and signed set model of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof  :o I was so happy I cried!
