Tools of the Trade / The Blackberry
« on: Jun 25, 2008, 11:21 pm »
I thought it was a good topic title. The blackberry line does have a reputation of its own. So I just got my first blackberry today, the 8330 curve. It is amazing. The blackberry with my Mac is a match made in heaven. It allows you to be SO organized. So I wonder, does every stage manger have one?  Or is it something that SMs have not caught onto yet? With technology becoming a major player in today's society, it seems that such a phone is needed, for a SM at least. Any thoughts would be welcomed. Just a discussion, not a haters/lovers topic discussion.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Last minute prop!?!?

Could you deflate the basketball, cut out a stick size hole, place the stick into the basketball, then reseal the ball? Cut some of the piece that you cut off originally and glue it back around the stick. Just an idea. No clue if it would work, but worth a try.

That is a perfect seat. I was in D when I went. I was also pretty much dead center with the stage. Enjoy and fill me in on how well you liked it.

I have seen "Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular" and it is amazing. You will love it. The last show that I saw I asked the ushers if the House Manager was available so that I could get through to the stage manager. Lucky for me, the stage manager was out in the lobby after the show with two of the cast members. That made it simple to get in and make my connection. So I would try to go through the house manager or ask at the will call/ticket/info counter outside of the lobby. I hope you get to meet the stage manager and I hope you enjoy the show. Where did you get seats at?

I had never heard of this before until I read about it last week. So tonight after I saw a show I asked the PSM if I could "shadow" him. He said yes and made my day. Bad thing is that January 5th is the last show of the season. The show opens back up in March. I am really busy right now, but I hope to get some time to take hold of this fantastic opportunity. Thanks for introducing me to this.! You really can learn something new every day!

College and Graduate Studies / Re: Other Colleges
« on: Aug 21, 2007, 06:03 pm »
I live in Knoxville, TN. The University of Tennessee has a campus here, but I do not feel it has that great of a theater program. I am looking to go out of state. I think a tech/design along with SM would be more beneficial to me. After all, a SM is suppose to be able to do it all. I am looking to get a BFA and I would stop with that. I do not feel a MFA would be worth the cost for me. As for conservatory vs. liberal arts, I am not that sure on which. I do not want a double major, at this point at least.

College and Graduate Studies / Other Colleges

So I know that many people talk a lot about Webster, DePaul, and NCSA. I am in love with all three and would love to go to them. I am a senior in HS and needing to apply very soon. I am seeing that these three cost a pretty penny and I am not sure that I could pay off loans after college. What other colleges are up there with these three, but might be less expensive? I am not being cheap here. I enjoy having the best in theater(i.e. lighting, rigging, sound), so I do not want a small school where I could not find this. I want to be trained very well and leave college after 4 years knowing that my money was spent wisely. That I got the best education I could get and was trained in or around the best equipment that there is. I know that I will not always have "the best of the best", but being trained on or near it would be nice. If anyone could give me some colleges to look into then I would be very thankful. Thank you for all you time!

Tools of the Trade / Re: Backstage booth/SM area

The obvious would be a table top area. A white board and cork board that would surround the table top. Storage under the table top would be great. Doing like shelves and making them to where you can slide clear containers into them. A drawer or a built in place to store pens and pencils and all other office type supplies that are needed. Since you have the luxury of building it, just make sure to build places to store things. That way they can be out of sight, but readily accessible. Best of luck!

I do not have any advice. Not that I can think of right now anyways. Just that I love that play. It is amazing. Best of luck though!

The Green Room / Re: SMs in media?
« on: Aug 03, 2007, 10:36 am »
I as watching "The Next Food Network Star" on The Food Network and when they got down to the bottom 3 they went on "Rachel Ray". It should the SM, it was a lady, coming and getting each person and showing them to the stage. What made me SO happy was when they actually put the SM name and position at the bottom of the screen. It was o nice of them to do that.

I love the black one! It is such an amazing feeling opening up the box and turning it on for the first time. You will love it. I am still looking at putting Windows on mine. I have not gone all the way through my Mac to see about what all I will need Windows for. I just wish I could have got the ipod with mine. Missed that deal by one year. Very sad lol. I started a "Mac-ers" group on Facebook. Look it up and join!

OK. This topic can go on, BUT..I GOT MY MAC!! I love it! It came today and I am like SO happy. I am using it pretty well right now. A few things are like "WTF" to me. No clue where "bootcamp" is at. The "iLife" app is wanting me to buy it or something. WIRELESS IS DOWN!! I have no clue what the password is for my wireless thing here at home. NO CLUE. Some guy came in and set all that up. I hope that I can find it here on my Sony some place. Thanks for all the advice. I am proud to be a Mac-er now. BTW, if no one has liked used that term before, "Mac-er", I now own it and I think I should start a group someplace. Give me a few days on that lol. Off I go to learn some more about my new baby.

Tools of the Trade / Should I become a Mac-er?
« on: Jul 23, 2007, 01:55 pm »
Guess the green room is the best place for this question. (Edit: moved to "Tools of the Trade" to complement other PC/Mac/MS Office topics there.  ~nmno)
I am looking to move to a Mac. My Sony is two years old and is getting slow and what not. I went to Comp USA the other day to look at the new Sony notebooks. The problem is the Vista program they ALL use now. I have heard that old programs just do not like Vista and cause a huge mess. I do not want that. So the guy showing me around said "Have you looked at a Mac?" Of course I love the way a Mac looks and the whole difference that they have from a PC. I had to contain myself from jumping up and down and just said "not really". My question is, if you have a Mac, do you love it? Was it hard to learn to use? Then comes the dreaded move. I have a lot to move from my Sony to a new computer, so I wonder if that would be a huge mess or not with a Mac. I am by no means a computer guru, so any advice or input will be greatly appreciated. THANKS!
