The Hardline / "Equity Business"
« on: Jan 15, 2011, 04:45 pm »
What is the "Equity Business" that happens in the 30 minutes prior to the first rehearsal?
What does, if anything, the SM provide Equity with weekly.
What does, if anything, the Deputy provide Equity with weekly.
What other "Equity Business" does stage management take care of during the pre-production/rehearsal/tech/performance stage.

Primarily I'm asking what the differences are (other than governing regulations/rules) between the production process for an Equity production vs. non-Equity/education production.

Prior to the first production, the Equity SM...
At the first rehearsal, the Equity SM...
Following the rehearsal week, the Equity SM...
If fog/haze is used in the productions, the Equity SM...

I've looked at tons of forms on the Equity site, but how/when are they submitted, etc.

If I were handed an Equity contract tomorrow, I would need to work on...

I hope some of this makes sense! I look forward to discussing!

EMCs can attend EPAs, but can EMCs apply for Equity ASM jobs?

The Green Room / Food in the Green Room and Smoking in costume?
« on: Apr 17, 2010, 01:15 pm »
How do you and your actors/crew use your Green Room? What is your smoking in costume policy? I ask because our new Costume Shop Supervisor has taken it upon himself to incorporate a few new rules pertaining to food/smoke and costumes. In the meeting before our final rehearsal before techs, he told the cast/crew that all food has to be removed from the Green Room at half-hour and they are not to smoke in costume AT ALL. They couldn't even put on a robe or coat. They are to change into the clothes they wore to the theatre then change back into the costume before making an entrance. I understand the need to preserve costumes for the run, but is this a bit much?

The Hardline / EMC for lighting intern
« on: Feb 25, 2010, 04:46 pm »
I'm interning at a theatre that participates in the EMC program, but my internship is for electrics. Can I receive EMC points? I want to SM professionally, but I have an equal interest in lights/sound and I love the internship position.

Any thoughts?

Employment / Re: Locations and Area Codes
« on: Jul 26, 2009, 03:24 pm »
As long as daddy keeps paying the phone bill, JDLynch will be keeping his 214 -area code. 8 years and counting!... Thanks, dad!  :D
I've thought about this, but like everyone else, who really cares? Someday I will change to be more marketable (I suppose) and available for my actors, such as getting a toll-free number which is a great idea, but until the need is there I don't see changing my number. If the employer is that concerned with my phone number to the point where it is the deciding factor on employment, I don't think I want to work for them.

The Green Room / Re: Best reason from an actor for being late
« on: Jul 26, 2009, 02:48 pm »
"I forgot we had a show today [matinee]." I get that one all the time actually.

My favorite is when I or my assistants call a late actor...
*ring, ring, ring...
Late actor: Hello?
SM team: Do you plan on coming to the show tonight?  ;)
Late actor: Oh, ****... I'm sorry, I'm on my way. Be there in 10 minutes. What time was call time?...

The call time has been the same for the last 2 weeks.... haha I love my job!

I have to go with Matthew on this one . . . I've been given a detailed schedule before by a director, but I never would publish something like that.

Now I'm curious to what you guys put on your schedules. What is considered too much to be published? My days usually consist of something like "Block pgs. 45-70 7:30pm-add character 8:30-add character, etc."
The director for the last show I SMed only gave me the schedule on a weekly basis because we had 7 weeks, much more than the norm. Our weekly day off was Saturday. She gave me the next week's schedule on Friday (usually handwritten on a napkin :)  gotta' love her!) and Saturday I would send the cast a modified/much easier to read version. So I guess I gave my cast "weeklies"  also... this is interesting!

Employment / Re: Share your special skills

I am a foster parent (dogs) and volunteer for the West Texas Humane Society. I spend every Saturday from 12-4 at various PetSmart locations helping out any way I can. Not sure if its a skill, but it is very special to me!

College and Graduate Studies / Re: Yale.

Great thoughts from everyone! I'm looking at Yale for Stage Management and Purchase for Lighting Design (MFA)... Not sure if Yale requires the 2-3 years of professional experience like they do for design though...

I at least make sure all my actors have left the makeup/dressing rooms before heading to the booth, then I head to FOH to talk to the house manager. After that I head to the booth and do the headset role call and make sure my beginners are in places.

You should take a look at these cases.

I really like these, although a bit pricey.
