Hello Everyone! I am a senior that is about to graduate, and is planning to go to college and graduate in theatre. The college i'm going to is Western Wyoming Community College. Do you have any knowlege of how their theatre runs?

Thanks!

Sometimes we get discouraged about shows. especially when a purely usually popular show is loosing money, or no one is coming to see it, or you're just bumed about the show, or something around those lines. What do you do to get more excited about it?

Put it all out of your head and focus on what you've got to do....(it'll be over in 5 days?)

um, nope. i have a count down for 10 days. that doesn't include the strike of the show. thanks so much for everybody's support!

....(I'm assuming you are doing something close to the same thing? you are trying to build up the program, and trainging other kids, and you know how to run most everything in your space?)

Um, no. the techies at my high school won't let me touch anything. i lost their trust when i was dead tired and cut a gel for a source four instead of for a fernell. (i know that i spelled that wrong.) :)

it's only 71 people because i everyday i deal with my director, who, last year was a choir teacher at a junior high school. So, most of these sophmores who were in her classes last year, as freshman, are now with her and drama. blah. yeah. can you tell why i started a "how the heck do you get 71 people to be quiet" post? yeah. Ideas are good for me. 8O

guess what the sick part is.... I have ONE ASM. and, i still have to find out how to graduate from high school this year... hmmmm... let me ponder that thought forever... jk. but yeah. ONE ASM, and a director who can't run a productive rehearsal for her LIFE, and i open my show in two days. TWO DAYS!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH i don't even know why i'm on the internet. i still have so much to do. see ya!

Wow....my last show absolutely nothing worked...it got to a point where even when I yelled it several times in a row they wouldn't stop...sometimes you run up against a group (highschool) that are blatantly talking, and won't stop(as in, they know they are talking, they hear me, and then keep talking because they don't want to listen to what a junior has to say..)..

yeah. exactly. wow. we can relate. um, i really think that they don't realize that they are talking, and that even when they are whispering, 71 people whispering creates a thundercloud of bolting loudness.    anyway, do you still like the lolipop thing? when the ensemble are just sitting backstage, hey! they get food so they're happy (until they pull it off), they're quiet so you're happy, and it almost works.

hide all guns and sharp objects.

If they have no weapons, they shouldn't kill each other.

        very funny.

these are mostly techies i'm dealing with... they can find any thing and use it as a weapon... jk :P

no, it's just that when the director enters the room, the tension rises ten fold. i don't know how to break the ice between everybody. all hate her.

I find calming the crew a lot harder. Personally, I use caffine

yes, but then they expect it every night or else it seems like they plan to be a b****.  very good suggestion. very good  indeed...  :D

I'm used to a cast of about 10-15, but right now I've got 26. That alone has taken some getting used to.

um... try seventy one people in your cast and then 25 in the orchestra and about only 10 very rebellious techies, with set changes that are killer: (the set is so huge it takes 5 guys to even push one of these gigantic pieces a foot.)

... did into the woods last year with 22. that was way easy.

i feel your pain.. i really do. if you get seventy people in your cast, you can always vent towards me. i completely understand.. i also am calling all set changes over the headset, spot cues, light cues, sound cues, and it is all in almost a three inch binder... eek! i open in a week! how in the world did i find time for this?????

ok... yes, i am a bit confused... how about community theatres, and high school. which one would i be? (high school sm.) where would i go to be a PSM. and in England it would be a Co. SM? or, no...?

"Are you so demanding of attention that you cannot keep your mouth shut whilst vital information is being distributed. Have you recently suffered amnesia, or did you never learn common curtisy and basic manners. If you were speaking, you would expect everyone to listen to you, so is it so inconcievable that other people would ask the same courtisy. Next time, before you open your mouth, look around at all the people here giving up their free time to put this show, and ask yourself, 'Is it fair that I am ruining this for them?'."

wow. that would take guts for me, but because i wouldn't say it THAT way, they might listen!!! :o

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Rehearsals: Be quiet!
« on: Mar 21, 2006, 03:03 am »
how do you help people be silent during rehearsals instead of talking and not focusing? (i'm dealing with high school seniors here. ) I have started to duck tape a sucker into their mouth, but when they're dancing, that's totally dangerous, and this also doesn't work on the people who have speaking roles. Does anybody have any suggestions? :?  8O  :?:

Ok. I feel really stupid asking this question, because i have no idea. but i know that it will be answered. What is the difference between a Production Stage Manager and a Stage Manager and a Co. Stage Manager...

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / MORALE: Tech week
« on: Mar 19, 2006, 11:54 pm »
I am entering a certain week we all know about... One simple question: if everyone is frusterated (high school theatre) about the show and hate the director, then how do you keep everyone from killing each other during TECH WEEK?

I always like the "Be on time!" It is very hard when 4 out of 6 of the brothers (from Seven Brides) are an hour late to rehearsal and you were supposed to choreograph the Social Dance

I want to take over the back 2 rows of seats, or the front two in the balcony.

me too. i take over the first two seats in the balcony of my auditorium.  the sound guy loves it  because he can hear a lot better than inside a booth in the back of the auditorium. the Light OP and Sound OP are on either side of me. i don't really like it backstage becasue i can get distracted a lot and miss a cue. the ASMs are of course on headset with me so if there is a problem, the actors know where to go to. i make the executive decision based on what they told me happened backstage. one show (footloose) a girl was doing a kick and her toenail broke off when she smacked a speaker. they told me what happened as soon as they found out. luckily it was the start of intermission so i could leave and help backstage for 15 minutes before intermission ended.
