Students and Novice Stage Managers / SM Team Hierarchy
« on: May 15, 2014, 03:00 pm »
Hi all,

As a college Junior I have had a little professional expereince working in outside venues, but have been able to find no answer to my question: What is the hierarchy breakdown of an SM team, between PM, PSM, SM, deputy SM, ASM? Everywhere I look, it has seemed to depend on where you work and what type of show or venue exists. Is there an industry standard??

Best,

KBM

If you're working with another ASM, it wouldn't hurt to sit down with them briefly before a run and ask them what things you need to be aware of in this show, i.e. are there any quick-changes in the wing you're managing, props that need to be caught, a specific traffic pattern. This way a channel is opened up for you to lean the pattern and duties from a professional while having some independence in an authority position along the way.

If you are not, the same could be asked of the stage manager [if there is any time]. What sort of show is it? That would help narrow your inquiries down.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Rehearsals: Be quiet!

My college has this problem occasionally, with students from outside the major frequently being cast and not quite knowing the rules. Usually, it's just a matter of them learning, or one or two vets being reminded. I find a simple "Can I have quite on the sides please!" usually gets the job done.
