@iamchristuffin Thanks for that, I think that's what we're leaning towards but it's good to have confirmation that we're on the right track :D

@loebtmc Sounds great - can I show my complete and utter ignorance and ask what BTDT is please?

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / PROPS: Happy Days Parasol
« on: May 10, 2015, 06:57 pm »
Hello all,

I am currently working on a production of Beckett's Happy Days down here in Australia (Brisbane to be precise) and I'm having some trouble finding details/ideas for how best to build the self-immolating parasol described in the play. It has an over-extended handle (in that it is able to be lengthened approx. double the average length of a parasol), and needs to ignite in flames (preferably triggered by actress holding handle), burning only the canopy. It also obviously needs to be reusable to last a whole season's worth of shows (about 30 or so).
Has anyone here worked on Happy Days before and could shed some light on the situation? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!
Kat

I take it you are here now, Kat? How are you finding it?

Cx

Hi Chris!
Yes I've been here in Glasgow about 7 months now, but I'm only now really getting back into theatre job searching - I realised that when I first arrived I needed a bit of a break from theatreland and I took it!

Not having much luck as of yet with finding work, though as I said I've only just really started looking. I'm hoping to hear back today actually about a job for the Edinburgh festival, which would be great and wonderful and marvellous, but I do have a few other ideas in mind if that falls through.

But otherwise, absolutely LOVING it here - crazy as it may seem, I really like the cold and rain and wind, and don't particularly enjoy the heat and humidity. Strange for an Australian I know, everyone I meet is very surprised that I moved here. Mostly everyone I've met has been really lovely and welcoming too, which has made settling in quite easy.

Thank you so much for you message!
Kathryn

Welcome! I had an Aussie ASM who says "bless their little cotton socks"- one of my favorite phrases. :)

I got it from my best friend back home - a sound technician - who got it from her mother, who got it from her mother, who got it from.......well I think you've got the picture.

Thank you for the welcome!

"Even Pluto bless his cotton socks" is the most adorable idiom I've seen in years. Welcome!

Thanks PSMKay - I aim to entertain :D.

Introductions / Hello from Oz.....but not for much longer!

Hi there!

My name is Kat and I am a stage management type based in Brisbane, Australia, but only for the next few months.

I am moving to Scotland in November this year on a 2 year working visa. I've wanted to travel and work overseas for as long as I can remember, but various circumstances have kept me in Oz for longer than I was expecting, HOWEVER the planets have aligned (even Pluto bless his cotton socks) and I am outta here!

My main goal for the next 2 years is to experience as much as possible, meet new people and generally just live a little. Work here in Oz for me has become a bit of a rut: same shows, same venues, same everything and I'm missing a bit of the passion that got me going in the first place. I'm interested mainly in ASM or props work (though my props experience is extremely limited, I'd love to learn more!).

Please drop me line if you're in the UK, I'd love to have a chat, or just drop me a line anyway!

Thanks!
Kat
