Students and Novice Stage Managers / Email signature
« on: Jan 06, 2015, 03:47 am »
Hi gang,

I was wondering if anyone had thoughts about email signatures? Specifically if you include the show you are working on.

I have a general one saying I am a freelancer and my contact info, but when I am working on several projects at a time what do you suggest?

Thanks!

Employment / Negotiating pay
« on: Jan 06, 2015, 03:32 am »
Hi all,

Forgive me in advance if this has been talked about somewhere else on this forum.

I was wondering if anyone had some tactics they could share about negotiating payments. I recently took this job at one stipend, but want to negotiate getting my stipend raised before I sign a contract. How would you go about doing this?

Thanks!

Rutgers-Mason Gross!!! I just transfered there myself into the stage management department, in fact. They, like SUNY Purchase offer a  BFA for stage management and have a conservatory run program. If you are willing to make the jump across the river into Jersey to go there, it would be a really really good choice. It's a really amazing intensive program with a lot of great contacts and opportunities.

I am going into my second semester there and am already stage managing a show this Spring. They teach you everything and are very well versed in every area. Mostly all the faculty and staff work in the field to this day. Everyone is really welcoming and it seems to be a really good fit for me :-)

I have SM'd 2 shows at my old college and Asm'd maybe 4-5 shows there as well. I also have had an ASM internship where I ASM'd 6 shows during the season and SM'd a children's show.
I have on SM show under my belt as well.

I have been passed down the idea of making a prompt book for rehearsal, with all the minutes from production meetings, reports from rehearsals, prop lists, script w/ blocking, ect. Then have a separate binder for the show script w/ cues, run list, performance reports, ect.
It makes the prompt book lighter for the show and less of a hassle to carry it to the booth.

I am from a younger generation (not so technically inclined though) and just starting out, but I would have to agree with the majority. That it gets distracting being on the computer and you lose focus for people who are trusting you to be focused during the entire rehearsal. Plenty of times when I think I have downtime while the director and actors are working, the director will shout to write something down and I try and pull up the notes I should put them in (time consuming if not readily available) and, at least when I get to it, I may forget what he said. Then it is embarrassing when you have to go back and ask them to repeat it when you should have been paying attention in the first place  :P

Tools of the Trade / Re: iPad: What do you think?

I thought I would hate hate hate it but I loved loved loved it!!!! Granted the worse thing about it was the fact there is no camera, but it was so easy and convenient to use.
Downsides: no cd or flash drive component
But it is lightweight and easy for transportation and it LOOKS cool as hell!

I have a small portable laptop already and probably wouldn't  (couldn't afford to) purchase it myself anyway, but I recomend it if you are okay with the no flashdrive thing (I kinow I wouldn't be)

Enjoy!
