The Green Room / Re: Why is it that...
« on: Sep 01, 2010, 11:53 am »
...playwrights seem to ALWAYS include characters in their shows whose names start with L, R, and C, and at least two characters with the same first initial.  Just to make blocking notation that much more difficult.

(I've got two L's, two R's, two G's and a C)

This is a particular pet peeve of mine I did a show earlier this year with 3 or 4 S names, why would you do that?

Tape Paralysis - the way you feel sitting, standing, going up and down subway stairs, etc the day after you tape out the floor.

Funny story,
Not sure why I didn't notice this afternoon, but I'm the PSM of the show in question.  You for sure did the right thing, and as far as I can tell you handled it very well.  We should get coffee sometime.

I think that any reputable small paying group would understand if you backed out for better pay, offer to help find a replacement.

And that job listing specifically is one of the ones that makes me really angry. I'm sure they're a great company who does great work, but $200 and it rehearses from 12-5pm?! When are you even supposed to have another job?

I agree 100%, I'm doing a low paying showcase right now, because I like my director, and I have a day job, and because I've been interning for nearly a year.  I just wanted to PSM ANYTHING, because, Interning and PAing is not Stage Managing.  But I can have another job, and everyone is flexible.  Daytime rehearsals? That's just unfair.

Now that I'm worked up, another thing. My particular pet peeve is when theaters and producers tout something as "Off Broadway", know that unexperienced Actors, Crew, and Designers will be more willing.  Except it's not Off Broadway, it's a showcase, or not equity at all.  I don't know, it just gets me.

EDIT: Code cleanup - PSMK

I don't know what your experience level is, or if you're willing to move, but ODC tours a lot.

Also, I make the best salad Nicoise ever.

The Green Room / Re: What did you learn today?
« on: Jul 24, 2010, 11:23 am »
I learned today that a great audience is the best part of theater.  We had an audience in the Park last night, that stayed through a Tornado Warning.  They were so excited, and so amazing, and made covering set pieces with tarp in poring rain worth it.  They even cheered when we ran on to stop the show!  I was maybe the best night I'e ever had, and I didn't even mind going home an hour late, soaking wet.

The Green Room / Re: Are there any AEA SM moms?
« on: Jul 19, 2010, 07:12 am »
I know an AEA resident PSM at a major Regional Theater who who two children under 5.  She's has a big support structure though, with her husband, a nanny, and her parents living in town.  But it seems to work for her!  And Someone was recently telling me about a Broadway PSM who brings her newborn everywhere.  Good luck!

I even had one person looking for a carpenter overhire tell me they were looking for someone from a more prestigious school!

It's funny you mention that, about a week ago, a sub deck carp was telling me how much he loved that all our theater's build crew had Master's degrees.

As someone who didn't go the college route, you could have knocked me over with a feather.  I mean the job pays okay for them, but non-IA Off Broadway theater isn't exactly going to pay for your masters in in technical theater from BU.  Ya know?

The Green Room / Re: Stage managing your life
« on: Jul 19, 2010, 06:53 am »
To say the rest of my life is unorganized is an understatement.  My husband does all of our laundry, cause I just don't notice it.  But I am a little OCD all the deep cleaning stuff, so maybe it's just that I only notice minutia in my actual life.

The Green Room / Re: Being friends with other stage managers
« on: Jul 19, 2010, 06:51 am »
I have several Stage Manager friends around the country, some I see a lot, others I don't.  I always try to pass on jobs and network.  I have noticed lately a few people mentioning that it is odd that I will pass on good jobs to other people.  I just got my friend a PA gig on a National Tour, and several coworkers asked why I wouldn't just take it for myself. Answer: I don't like the show they're doing, but they do.

Also, a few SMs who I have known for a long time seem to have some weird career envy.  They will mention that they are extremely competitive with this person or that, or make off handed remarks about how they can't believe how well I'm doing.  But these aren't close friends.  Perhaps it's that I'm in that late twenties group where some are starting to get tired of the life style etc...
