Employment / Civilian Resume?
« on: Apr 21, 2011, 01:18 am »
I'm at a point in my life where I'm seriously considering "retiring" from the whole stage management thing. I've settled down in my home town (which does not have a big theater scene), and am looking for work to start over. Problem is, I went to school for theater and have had very few non-theater jobs since I was a teenager. I need to send out some resumes, but am having a hard time figuring out how to format a "civilian" resume which would be easily understood by employers who have no knowledge of what "ASM" or "LB Op" means.

Another concern is how to convey several short contracts. It seems that all the examples of non-theater resumes I come across say things like "Independent Consultant, 2006-Present," while my jobs are, for example, working a Christmas show at the same theater several years in a row, with gigs elsewhere in between. I can't exactly say "Stage Manager at Such and Such Theater, 2007-Present," when I was only there two months out of the year, and was working at several different places during that time period.

Any advice/resume examples would be greatly appreciated!

I keep hearing about the superglue thing lately... will have to try it.

Chapstick or lip balm is also good for fixing little hair/wig issues at the last second, or for getting tight rings unstuck from fingers!

Gotta second the rubbing-alcohol-as-eraser thing, and add that it also gets white-out spills out of carpet! (You might want to test on a hidden bit of carpet first, though.)

Tools of the Trade / Re: Kit: Box vs. Bag
« on: Feb 09, 2010, 06:37 pm »
I've always used boxes in the past, usually tackle box types or craft boxes. My last kit was the kind where the handle's on the side and you lay it down to open it, so when you pick it up, things shift around and out of their compartments and it makes noise. The one before that was a tackle box, and with the handle on the lid I was always scared that when I picked it up the lock would break and everything would come crashing down.

So, I've been using a messenger bag, but it's really not quite right for me either. I'm in the market for something new right now, and have been looking at the rolling suitcase-like kind of craft cases, like these:

or these box/messenger bag hybrid totes:

Only problem is I would really want to try them out before I buy them, but don't know where to find them other than online (and I've been looking!)  :-\

To the OP: It really is whatever works best for you, on top of whatever resources the theatre you're working for already provides. Some places will have giant, stocked SM roadboxes, making it kind of redundant to have your own kit at all. Others... not so much. I'd say just do some research and pick whatever you like best; if you decide after you've used it for a while to try something else, that's okay too!

Tools of the Trade / Re: THE Sharpie topic
« on: Feb 09, 2010, 06:17 pm »
Maybe I have bad Sharpie karma, but my keychain mini-sharpies tend to fall off and get lost, and my retractable Sharpies dry out. Regular Sharpies always get loaned out and never returned, but I love Libby's idea of attaching a Sharpie to your belt with tie line around the cap... this way, if I let someone borrow it, they'll HAVE to return it (or keep it without the cap)!
