I joined a historical drama show in the Cultural Centre Studio as a crew last week and I am now working on a drama about a gay guy as ASM, which will show in early Aug at the Fringe Club in Hong Kong.

Should be working on Sweeny Todd Musical as ASM this Aug...and crew head in a high school production in late Aug early Sept.

I am a theatre diploma student but I get my experiences elsewhere. And mostly I get my jobs from my friends.

Don't hesitate to try for every post. I have been a ticketing staff, an usher, an ASM, a DSM, a stage crew, a projection operator, a lighting crew...everything helps in my SM career. I start off as volunteer but now I am getting paid.

Just ask your friends who are in the industry if there are any small shows where you can fit in...starting with community theatre is a good choice...in Hong Kong we have a saying 'everyone start off with the cultural centre studio (a small community theatre venue)'

Good luck : )

Thank you for ur help!

As for lighting/sound equipments, we can borrow them for free from our school's stock, but we will need to buy walkies and headsets for ourselves, we will need probably 5 headsets and 8 walkies.

Hi I am new here : )

I am from Hong Kong (em, u know, that city in China, used to be a British colony...well dah who cares lol) and I am studying Stage Management at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts : ) Just starting

The problem I am facing is...fellows from my year want to have a a rock band show-cum-fashion show of our own at the end of 08/09 academic year, so it's like a showcase of us techie student's and design student's works.  And they elected me as the project manager for it. But I have only done drama and dinner shows and musicals. So I dunno how to start with.

So, some questions in my mind:
1. What is the budget for a band show with approx. 150 audience, in a studio theatre? What's the money spent on? If any budget sample can be provided it would be HIGHLY appreciated : )
2. I am doing researches on tech riders of band shows and I come across the terms PA system and sub mix, what do these two terms mean?
3. What does FOH technician do?

And any advice would be appreciated! Thanks a LOT : )

I dunno how it goes in the US or Canada but here in Hong Kong (I study in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts), ASM do almost everything.

But it depends on what show you are in, like for my previous show, a dinner show celebrating a major local magazine's 40th Anniversary, ASM (aka Project Assistants) do a lot of paper work. During pre show we did researches on costumes (for a dance piece in the show) we did pricing for decoration accessories, we made powerpoint presentations of the magazine's past glories for the show night...and during the dinner show, we acted as escorts to make sure the guests go on stage and off stage safely, we prompted the dancers to go on stage, and I even learned to sew elastic straps on high heel shoes coz the dancers need to dance in them.

As for theatre shows, we mostly do props research, prepare rehearsal rooms, shop for stuff, help with scene changes..and loads

Well but coz every show is different, do more shows and get more field experience is the best way of learning.
