Employment / Re: Jobs after Graduating in December
« on: Nov 11, 2012, 03:36 pm »

Currently I live in Wichita, KS... Great place to grow up and do really good summer stock, but not a great place to stay if you want a career in theatre year-round. I work or have worked at the only theaters in town that pay. I'm going to relocate to go to a bigger and more professional metaphorical pond, I'm just not quite ready to do so without a job. I'm looking at those websites in the other forum for anything that comes up.

SMrose- I am ultimately looking for SM jobs, but if I'm working, I'm happy. I'll definitely sign up for the referral list wherever I go, thanks for the tip.

Em- I've been looking at Goodspeed for awhile and am going to apply. Did North Shore change June-December season when they re-opened? That's what it looks like on their website. As for this summer, I am going to apply other places... but Mary Poppins... And Nancy has told me she'll kill me if I'm not there this summer  :) .

Employment / Jobs after Graduating in December
« on: Nov 10, 2012, 05:19 pm »
So I am finally graduating in December... hooray! As excited as I am to be finished with school, I have had the hardest time finding jobs for the spring. I check BackstageJobs and artsearch daily and have been sending out resumes and cover letters like crazy, but haven't gotten any leads. I know this is a hard time to find work and that most theaters staff their entire season in the summer/fall, so I realize that I'm at a bit of a disadvantage. Is there anyone else on here who graduated in December? Any tips for finding work in the winter/spring? I'm willing to travel anywhere, but can't really afford non-paying internships (I also don't agree with them...). I have a lot of experience with musicals and am really interested in touring, but I know a lot of those jobs are about who you know and being in the right place at the right time.

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated. I'm a member of IATSE and enough get work at home, but would really love to get experience elsewhere.

I love those too! I always make sure and buy the long. I'm 5'8" and the regular length is too short. They don't have cargo pockets, but I do ok with my hooking stuff to my belt or putting it in my back pockets. http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/juniors/bottoms/pants/PRD~344547/SO+Stretch+Twill+Pants.jsp

Patti LuPone will make you shut off those cameras and microphones.

@nerdfighter are you in college? If so, and you're looking to take a semester off, there is the Disney College Program. It's an internship they have in both Florida and California. I did it about 3 years ago. Although there aren't any positions in stage management or any kind of technical crew, they do have a lot of people in costuming (I worked in parade wardrobe). As a CP, you are kinda the lowest of the low on the Disney totem pole- you don't get paid very much (minimum wage) and the work you do isn't the most fulfilling. However, it can be a lot of fun and you'll meet some really great people. Plus you can go to the parks for free anytime when you're not working!
Walt Disney World has an interesting class called Entertainment Show Production which gives you a behind the scenes look at how they operate. They also have other classes that can give you college credit if you work it out with your university. If you network while you're there, you could perhaps shadow one of the stage managers on a large show.
A lot of the people who do the college program are 'Disneyholics', but I went into it just needing a break from school. You learn a lot about the history of Disney and how they work as a company and while some people can say it ruins the magic, I found that it made me even more interested.
I definitely wouldn't want to work there full time, but the one semester I did was fun.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Nite Ize has a variety of tool belts ranging in size. I have the XL Utility Holster and really like it.
