I always call places and do a head count if I am the only SM. In dance when there are several people on stage, say Nutcracker, I always double check by asking if their partner is with them and ask if anyone is missing.  I would hate to bring up the curtain with a missing dancer.

BUT THEN AGAIN...

Before I was AEA, I worked for a summerstock theatre.  The 3 girls in the cast (Ain't Misbehavin') were pushing their lateness to places everyday.  It just kept getting longer and longer because they would sit around the dressing room until I would call five.  The management didn't want to do anything about it.  I finally said, enough is enough and proceeded to show them who was in charge. It was several minutes after places, they were almost ready and I had the orchestra start.  Needless to say, they learned their lesson and never challenged a places call.  I don't think I could get away with that in an AEA house, but then again I would hope that all AEA are professional enough to get to places in a reasonable time.

Thanks lgh007,

I guess I knew my answer all along. It is who you know first, talent second.  Hopefully we will all run into the right person at the right time.

Excellent Post.  Thanks.
As for climbing the ladder do you have any suggestions for becoming a PA on Broadway?  Is that an AEA position as well? Do you have to know people or will they hire complete strangers?  Just curious.

Employment / Re: First Aid/Fire Guard
« on: Aug 21, 2007, 11:47 pm »
I believe Fireguard is a NYC thing. I was asked if I had my card. Of course I felt stupid as I had no idea what they were talking about. But, the theatre company gave me a form and a check and I had to go take a test. It wasn't too bad, but I was glad I looked at the study guide as there were things I never even thought of, like parts of a commerical sprinkler system. I certainly would not be concerned about the Fireguard unless you have to go take the test and even then if you have some common sense you will have no problem with it.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Dressing For The Part?

I have read a lot about college, general blacks, and dressing for the part.  I really didn't see anything about NYC.  What would be suggested for NYC or a Lort C or B theatre?
