You are the high schooler in this situation. I think it's important that you stay above the drama and focus on doing what's right for the show. Your gut instinct is right on in my estimation. The director should be made aware of the situation, and coming from you it will be an unbiased account of what is going on. The director is the person that will need to deal with the ramifications, not you, and I think you have done well to stay on course with your responsibility. Kudos to you!

The Hardline / Re: Equity SMs: Running LX?

Hey Charlie,

I agree that it is not SOP. I have, however, done my share of SMing in Philly (probably at the two theaters that you are referring to) and have typically negotiated a separate fee to run the board. They were usually SPT contracts and once it was understood on my end that they wanted me to run the board and they understood that there would be an additional fee it was all good. I did get asked at a LORT house once, but I refused (due to the contract) and they found a separate op for the show.

Agreed. Either way you may end up out of a job, but with the latter approach you may find yourself reinvigorated and rededicated to your art. If the faculty cares about educating the students then they will respond in kind, if not then you can feel good about attempting to make a difference. Is this director usually associated with the college? I'm sure most directors would jump onboard with an SM who can get the performers to attend rehearsals. Good Luck.

Gracias. Labor strife is a very confusing, yet very necessary (in order to bring about change) topic. My thoughts are with Local 1 members as well as those who stand with them. Let's hope today's talks are productive.

I was working on a World Premiere Musical in NJ and one of my ASMs was running a scene change just upstage of a set of sliding doors. The stage had a series of slip stages that were run from an automated winch and in the hub-bub of the change she went downstage too far and her feet went out from under her and landed on her backside. She was able to crawl offstage just behind the doors as they slid open to reveal the next scene. Not sure how we managed the sequence because she was on headset the entire time and it got a bit chaotic. The audience was none-the-wiser. The ASM never made that mistake again!

... The Equity Council, per the Union's Broadway contract language, endorses and supports the strike, which has been sanctioned by Local One's IATSE International President, and directs its members to honor the picket line.

As per Equity's contract, we are instructing our members to report to their theaters and sign in for work.

???

How is it possible to honor the picket line yet sign in for work? My understanding is the latter statement, that AEA members must honor the signed contract regardless of any extenuating circumstances.
