I used a system very much like that in high school.  I would layer a neon color (orange for lights, pink for sound. . .) over a primary color (red for stand by, green for go) and write the cue number/letter inside the circle.

In rehearsal calls, I go by character name for the sake of the understudies.  On sign in sheets, I was always taught to do first name last name.  Maybe it's because I learned my paperwork styles in college where nothing is ever formal

Employment / ASM work in Chicago

I know Chicago is a big town and it may be tough to get ASM work here, but I'm new to the city and really want to get the rest of my EMC points (or at least a paying job).  Does anyone have any pointers on finding a gig in Chicago (I already went out and got a copy of PerformInk)?  Anyone need an ASM ?

I was an EMC ASM for 7 months with an SPT6 company and I made $100/week.  BUT this was an internship and we got free housing.  I was talking to guy last night who had gotten $50/week at a place in Chicago.  I honestly think it depends on the resources of the theater.

A LOT of the companies in MI are understaffed to the point that SMs run the lightboard as well.

I however wouldnt necessarily agree that the proficient in Rosco's Horizon lighting system is that important for an SM job, granted I don't really know what that is so i could just need to be enlightened on that.  I'm sure its a good thing to know as some places may put it to use.

Horizon is a lightboard operating system that can be loaded into an everyday computer.  Often used by companies that don't have the space/money for a full sized board.

As I'm not Equity (yeet), I may not be as helpful as teh others, but here's a cut and paste of my skills section:

Microsoft Office Suite, set construction, dry walling, scenic painting, basic costume construction, character make-up, clerical skills, general knowledge of AEA regulations, proficient in Rosco’s Horizon lighting system

I was told by the PSM at my internship that the first one and the last 2 are the most important, everything thing else shows that I can do more that SM (and in case I have to go for a non-SM gig).

When I went EMC, the PSM I was working under would give me "Equity Quizzes" everyday.  I pretty much learned the whole SPT book in 3 weeks. 
Later, this same PSM would call shows in various hats from costume storage.

When I was younger, there was a traveling circus that came to the amphitheater I worked at every summer.  The circus would borrow the amphitheater’s ushers, so many a summer afternoon was spent under the bigtop.  Recently I've decided that I want to get back to life with the circus.  My question is, is it possible to find work as a stage manager in the circus world?  Do circuses have SMs?  If not, what do they have?

My first kit in high school was in a plastic lunch box.  Over the years I've graduated to small tool boxes, a backpack, and now a $20.00 artist's bin that I got at the campus bookstore a few years ago.  I actually prefer a smaller kit since I'm never sure if I'll have the cash to make a new box everywhere I go (fresh out of college = no $$$).  Besides, a good sized SM box comes in handy when you live in the dorms.
