I'm with you, Melissitchka - travel would be wonderful and having my home base in Fort Lauderdale, FL would be ideal (family here.) I'm working odd jobs and not a lot of theater because there is no living wage for theater in this part of the state. So, yeah, traveling for a show/gig, then coming home and then traveling again for work and then coming home - gaining more experience as an SM - that would be my dream.

Greetings and Merry Christmas from South Florida! I'm not a newbie, but life has taken me away from the SMNetwork. I'm a Stage Manager by trade and education. I"m also a voice-over artist, but found most of my fulfillment with Stage Management in Atlanta, GA. I"m in the South Florida market (again) and looking to make contacts, maybe travel for work, and re-build everything I learned along my way. Frohe Weihnachten everyone, and a very prosperous New Year to Everyone!

Not sure if this belongs in this forum, but here it goes...This was posted on the ATML yahoo list:
THEATRE LOGIC
In is down, down is front,
out is up, up is back,
off is out, on is in,
and of course -
right is left, and left is right.
A drop shouldn't and a
block and fall does neither.
A prop doesn't and
a cove has no water.
Tripping is O.K.
A running crew rarely gets anywhere.
A purchase line will buy you nothing.
A trap will not catch anything.
A gridiron has nothing to do with football.
A Strike is work
(in fact a lot of work).
And a green room, thank God, usually isn't.
Now that you are fully versed in theatrical terms,
Break a leg...
but not really!

I have do well to put it past me and am now being considered for other SM jobs in my area. I hope to be Equity in like 5 to 6 years, debt pending.

I actually now have another part-time gig as House Management for a Union Theater for a show. So I'll be able to start over and show what I can do and how I work, even if I'm not Union. So I guess it is true: one door closes so another one can open. 
But naw, I'm done with the other theater. There are so many good theaters out there that I haven't experienced yet: that's my future calling.

Your rant is perfectly understandable. I wish more producers and Production Managers were more up-front with what they do and do not want, and I wish they were honest early enough in the show process so that it doesn't waste anyone's time. But yeah, that's kinda annoying. SMs are the centers of communication - I don't understand what's so scary about communicating with us. *shrug*

Great suggestion! Although I think it's just a learning experience. I have learned to what level I will accept the treatment that others give me as a Stage Manager, and I know where I will not work at again.

Just to let those that have been keeping up know, the Producers fired me with two weekends left on the show.

Thanks for that explanation. I just always feel extremely down that I worked on something so hard and have to turn it in at the end of the run. Ah well. Maybe i can go to law school and become a great lawyer and change those rules in 3000.

What is the history on giving the original Prompt Script to the theater company at the end of a run? What's the reasoning behind that? Are there any experiences out there where the SM kept the original and gave the company a copy? What about the director? Ever heard of a Director wanting a copy of the Prompt Script?
