The Showcase code is an AEA agreement in NYC - little to no pay (it's a stipend).  Lots of work, very little pay.

College and Graduate Studies / Re: Need Help Narrowing Down!

Do you want to cross off programs with grad programs?

I would push for you to be in or near the city you think you wish to live in - you might as well start making connections while you are in college.

I think they are all pretty much interchangeable as far as undergraduate programs, and without knowing how you learn, like to learn or what you want to learn, it's hard to give you more personalized information.

The only problem I have with "counting" and not reading the music is as a Stage Manager, you may get distracted in your counting . . . like with dealing with another cue issue.  So, if all you have is counts of 8 in the calling script, it maybe harder to follow.  I mean, it's not a terrible way to count, but may not always be ideal.

(And it also depends on how your designers work . . . i found if your lighting designer doesn't work off the score, chances are you won't be calling off the score . . . )

In my current show, we have a lovely statue carved out dense foam, then painted . . . looks amazingly like marble.

Might be easy to craft something . . .

Sometimes you have to call off the score.

this is the piano score as PDF, shurnk, and the put into my word system of laying out my calling script.

The Hardline / Re: AEA ASM?
« on: Sep 02, 2011, 02:18 pm »
You can opt out of being listed in the program as ASM; I have done so on two occasions.

One I was an ASM of record on a rep, but doing do work on the second show, and thought it silly, and had my name removed.

The second, I was brought in at the last minute as a second ASM, and didn't want attention drawn to me as an ASM.

Did so with AEA's and the theater's blessing - it's was my call.

and just because an AEA ASM is not listed does not mean there is not one on contract . . . there are many reasons why an ASM could be left off on a program.

The Hardline / Re: Prompt Script Etiquette
« on: Sep 01, 2011, 11:21 am »
Which is why a lot of Stage Managers, not naming names, don't keep really "neat" calling scripts, and make them so really only they can call off of them . . .

if someone else needs to call . . . they they would need to pay an additional amount to clean up the script.

I would look into the current UCSD and La Jolla Playhouse and Old Globe relationship.  Why not get a good education, but have the opportunity to work on professional musical theater pieces?

I went to UCI as an undergrad.  CCM never wrote me back when I wrote 11 years ago looking for a grad school.

Employment / Re: to QR or not to QR?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_code

I think the QR on the stage management resume might be a waste of space.

Hiring a member of a stage management staff, especially a PSM, is not a quick decision, and anyone who is going to being take them time to make the decision to hire you, pay you your rate, and commit to you by handing you a show, will be willing to take the time to type in your e-mail address or a web address.

Remember, that most people doing the hiring are a bit older then the current technology, and may wonder what that is.

I am pretty tech savvy guy, married to an EXTREMELY tech savvy guy - we have never used a QR reader.

Remember, Stage Management is not a TECH field, we manage people.

There is no MFA Stage Management that focuses on musical theater stage management, but there are programs that do musicals

Look at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and UC Irvine (Has a MFA in Musical Theatre).

What sort of upsets me is that AEA didn't call or email the SMs to outline our options.

Yeah, AEA called my theatre company and said we would be allowed to cancel Sunday rehearsal and schedule Monday rehearsal, on our day off.

Which is odd, because it would mean seven days straight, leading into staging and tech - which I do not think is a good idea.

We shall see where we are at Saturday before we make a decision.

The Hardline / Re: AEA MAternity Leave

Maternity or paternity leave doesn't need to be for having your child, but could be for adopting a child - so could be required even without adding one person to the planet

We are in rehearsal in Boston - Company Management getting flashlights for everyone, and recommending three days of food.

We shall see.
