I'm curious - why can't you be called an ASM?

Tools of the Trade / Prop Money

Hi all,

Any suggestions of good paper to print money on? The show I'm on at the moment has a huge amount (it's set in a casino), and standard A4 isn't very realistic!

Thanks!

P.S. - If you're on the same groups and forums as I am, I'm sorry that you're going to see this question quite a few times!

P.P.S. - Is this the right sub to post this in?!

I tried to guess based on your past posts, but no dice - are you US based?

Hi Kay,

I've attached a UK version for you - just a few changes! I don't know whether this applies to any other countries - Aus maybe?

KBM, as others have mentioned, this is in a perfect world. My current season (7 operas, I'm on two of them) has a SSM (acting as a Company Manager), and 4 teams of SM, DSM, ASM!

Hope this helps.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Who builds your Qlab file, and how?
« on: Apr 16, 2014, 05:17 am »
My current show is a promenade piece, through 18 different spaces. We've got three QLab computers, all talking to each other in both directions, each also with multiple foot pedals and triggers spread through the spaces, and they all also talk to the one ETC ION desk, which is running 17 different cue lists - all through the magic of MIDI!

It was very very tough to install though - because of the cable runs (some over 150m), most of the links are boosted at least once - and the LD and PSE came close to blows about it more than once!

We've also had problems with cables working loose. Because MIDI connectors don't have a locking latch, there's no way to ensure they stay in position. It's meant that our rig checks are twice as long and thorough as they normally are.

When MIDI works, it's great. When it doesn't, troubleshooting can take a very long time!

I'm concerned that they aren't informing the fire marshal - what was their justification for this? Could you inform them directly? Over here, if you see something unsafe, and don't report it, you could be just as liable as anyone else in the event of an incident - I don't know OSHA's policy/your laws about that to give you more information I'm afraid.

As for Flamex/Flamebar'ing items - do you have budget/petty cash yourself? If no-one else will, you could always purchase it.

With regards to the actors - what age are we talking about? Just because they have trouble with US/DS, doesn't mean they won't realise that they are holding live fire, and act accordingly.

I've never seen GAMtorches specifically (what an awful video on their site!), but have used similar items with liquid fuel. If they are dropped, the flame is automatically extinguished, so that makes them a whole lot safer.

On the whole, so long as FM is informed, and combustible items are made retardant, and cast are talked through everything, I would be happier to proceed with the effects.

Hope this helps

I've never experienced anything like that with creatives. Are they working on another show (maybe in tech or previews) as well? It could just be that they're really busy, and the other show gets priority.

How long has this been going on? You say it was from day 1, but where are you now? And is this both set/costume AND LX designers?

If the situation hasn't improved in another week or so, I'd just call a meeting and bash through everything in one big go, then mention something at the end. Not in an accusatory way, just drop it in as part of a chatty catch-up.

Welcome!

I think I've seen that episode of QI (I'm a bit of a fanboy....) - I seem to remember Stephen Fry saying something about how the staff didn't notice, and only discovered it was stolen when a tourist asked them what had happened to the Mona Lisa!

Employment / Re: How far to book ahead?
« on: Jan 29, 2014, 02:52 am »
As I'm really only in year 3 of my career after university, my focus is on getting repeat contracts with companies I liked working for- rather than rapid career change or progression.

As a result, I'm 'saving dates' until for much of 2014 - apart from a  week in March, and a five week block in August, I'm unavailable until early November now.

That said, there are two places that would get a free pass to my time, if they were to offer me something!

C

E2A: If I were to pull out of a contract, it would have to be at least a month beforehand - I wouldn't want to feel like I was leaving them in the lurch!

Sorry for the delayed reply! I didn't realize SMNetwork doesn't notify you via email of replies.

I think there's a setting somewhere that activates this feature. Kay?

Off the top of my head, I can't think of a way to do it, without making a long, complicated formula using IF, NOT & AND....

Unless you use 'IF' with conditional formatting or something to highlight conflicts...

Sorry, thinking aloud!

However, www.doodle.com is sort of the thing I'm imagining. Could you use that in the interim?

That became a thing on the last show I did with Automation - if you didn't mention how long it was since it last broke, it would be fine....

In the UK, in a normal situation with a 3 (or more) person team, the SM doesn't call the show. That is the role of the Deputy Stage Manager.

As an SM on shows like this, I would start the show, watch any clearances, cue entrances, etc. I suppose you could think of it as an ASM, just with a different priority for tasks, and more responsibility if anything adverse were to happen.

Hope this helps - let me know if you have any questions!
