Hi all!  I know it is not quite the end of the month, but I am leaving to go out of the country for three weeks tomorrow, and I wanted to make sure I could update the categories for January while I still have access to the internet...

January will be a general knowledge/mixed bag month, and we will return to our regularly scheduled system of category picking in February.

Enjoy!! :-)

Thank you for all of the replies, but we have as many testers as we need right now.  I will keep your messages for the next round of testing.

Thanks!

College and Graduate Studies / Re: SM Certificate Programs?
« on: Dec 06, 2011, 11:06 am »
Although I generally agree with PSMKay that a stage management career is generally based on networking and job experience, there is something to be gained in going to school.  Some of it is contacts, but also in theatre history and other areas of theatre besides stage management, such as drafting or basic dance steps.
The one program I know of that offers a 2 year program is The Theatre Academy at LA City College, which offers a program in Entertainment Technology (design, SM, lighting, etc).  Their website is http://lacitycollege.edu/academic/departments/theatreacademy/index.html.

For several years we used a small clip light attached to a long extension cord which ran through the ceiling into the booth, where it was attached to a power strip with a rocker switch.  Turn the power strip on, light comes on, turn it off and the light goes out.  Worked wonders!

The Green Room / Re: Best one-liner from a performance report

From a rehearsal report for a production of The Balcony, but still pretty funny... (**slightly adult content, so please avert your eyes if you are uncomfortable**)

-Is the large penis detachable from its pedestal?  If possible, we would like for it to be so that it can be passed around.
-What will the two penises (what is the plural of penis?) be made of?  Will they bounce?  Could the larger one possibly be used as a bat with which to hit the smaller one?

Amazing!  Literature without a Stephen King question?  Of course I still didn't know the answers, but I think this is the first time this has happened. :-)

Four small lead weights.  Makes the bag a little heavy, but they are perfect for holding down the corners of groundplans, etc that have been in a roll...

I am hoping someone might have some info tucked away that may be able to help me with a problem.  For an upcoming show, we are looking for what the preshow announcement would have been in 1959.  (Yes, I am aware that it is unlikely that there would have been an announcement, but if there were...)  It would be for a Broadway try out in Boston.

Any ideas that anyone might be able to give would be great!  Unfortunately Google hasn't been very helpful.

Thanks!!

College and Graduate Studies / Re: Early HS Graduation
« on: Sep 22, 2011, 09:31 pm »
I graduated from high school a year early and went to the University of Northern Colorado to get a degree in directing.  There were both pluses and minuses.  It was hard personally to graduate before all of my friends (many of whom I had gone to school with since kindergarten), but the trade off of going to a school where I could take classes that were really interesting, and where no one knew me and I wasn't in the shadow of an academically successful older sibling made a huge difference in my confidence.
Professionally it was both good and bad.  I was working while many of my friends were still in school, so I was able to get a lot of experience early on, however, it meant that I was frequently the youngest person on a SM team.  I had to work extra hard to be respected (particularly with older stage hands), and it took a long time for me to be comfortable supervising people who where sometimes three times my age.
Overall, it was one of the best decisions that I have ever made for myself, but it was an intensely personal and tough choice.  (It did involve petitioning the school board, so if you decide to do it, start early to make sure all the ducks are in a row).
Ultimately, only you will be able to decide if it is right for you.  If you have specific questions, please feel free to PM me.  Good luck!!

On the last show I called with a heavy cue load including projections the projections designer suggested using "Tabs".  I am not sure of the origin, but it worked well because it sounds different than lights, sound, shift, etc...  I have also used "P", as in "P90" go.

Let us know what you end up using!
