Employment / Re: Promissory Note versus Contract
« on: Apr 30, 2010, 02:16 pm »
what does it say? what are you being asked to sign - specifically? does it only ask you to promise you won't take another show? is there guaranteed pay/responsibility from their end if anything changes and you don't end up working w them? does it spell out times or pay scale or anything at all? have you negotiated your salary/hours/responsibilities verbally and they just aren't typed into a formal contract yet? Is this a precursor to a formal contract?

you have the right (within reason) to edit in terms and conditions that you are comfortable with before signing - and you need to know what those are and what you are agreeing to by signing this -

"SING FASTER"
Sing Faster: The Stagehand's Ring Cycle is an acclaimed independent film documentary, capturing Richard Wagner's 'Ring Cycle' from the union stagehand's point of view. The film received the Sundance Filmmaker's Trophy in 1999.  These behind-the-scenes stars lead us through their own version of Wagner's operatic spectacle as they perform astonishing feats of stagecraft, trade off-stage banter, and offer an insider's perspective on a strange and complex 19th-century operatic tradition.

A Q&A with director Jon Else will follow the screening.

What is the play, and must everyone actually eat? How much must they eat? And how close is the audience?

There are budget items on all levels - an easy tea sandwich is white bread with a lettuce leaf dangling out one side making excellent, stage-ready tea sandwiches - but all of this gets very labor-intense, and as well you want things you can, if possible, reuse or make ahead to minimize waste. Also, you don't want something that can stain a costume or drop on the furniture or floor. You also have to keep in mind things that melt under lights. I would avoid condiments, jellies, spreads - especially the sugary ones. And keep in mind that you will want to add fluids for the actors eating. there's a reason why, in the old days, people used things like instant mashed potatoes to build everything!

There is nothing wrong with gluing and shellacking fake or real items on most of the tray and having only a handful of real, replenished sweets or sandwiches (set in a consistent place) for the actors who must taste nightly.

yeah blocking notes are insane - and sometimes missing key elements (she puts the cup down - when the heck did she pick it up?)

to our wonderful UK friends - I was able to track down the one sole British copy in the LA Library system and borrow it for a short term. HURRAY - thank you so much for your assistance in the meantime!

Always note and report injuries, it protects both actor and producer. I have seen actors 1) injured off site or 2) choosing not to give an injury attention as needed and then trying to have the producer take medical responsibility OR have had producers try to wriggle out of things that, because I had noted them in the rehearsal or performance reports and submitted an injury report to AEA, had a paper trail. No one wants injuries, and no one wants them to affect future hiring or future health, and documentation is the solution.

a further request - to any of our British members - the official acting edition here has been updated and includes americanized references - and we are trying to revert to the original British if we can - so if someone has an older, UK copy please PM me and help us!

thank you

About to start rehearsal - anyone who's done this and has some tricks up their sleeves regarding the food, the massive prop list or just plain ol' surviving the choreo, please share!

The Green Room / Re: Oh earthquakes, how I loathe thee...
« on: Apr 05, 2010, 02:57 am »
Amusingly, we just added an earthquake emergency sheet to the SM kit online. I was watching a show from the top three rows (risers, swaying pretty wildly) in a small house, those of us in the top rows were looking around to see if anyone was leaving or the show would stop or...? - and nothing. I glanced above me to discover I was sitting under a leiko with no safety chain, and quickly moved away from the instrument....several people left at intermission.

In looking it up on the earthquake registry site, there were several shakers also in No Cal and Seattle - perhaps the west coast is finally breaking off and falling into the ocean, or floating away and forming our own country...?
