Introductions / Re: New and Excited

Congrats on the gig, and best wishes on a successful rehearsal process. This forum is a wealth of experience and knowledge that I've found very useful. Feel free to ask questions, and let us know how your show goes.

My opinions, similar to those already offered:
$300/week + housing is better than a lot of professional PA gigs I've worked.

Just adding a vigorous head nod here.

I third that statement: I would LOVE to get that kind of pay plus housing right now. I'm of the opinion it's always great to get paid to learn (as opposed to the other way around).  :)

As a result, when you search my name, absolutely nothing related to me shows up, because there are 10,000,000 of me out there.

I had the same problem: a Google search for "Michelle Wood" came up with 100s of possibilities. That's why I use my middle initial professionally. "Michelle R. Wood" was a lot easy to do search targeting and SEO for, and I'm the number one and number two Google search most days for that (as well as the only one on IMDB). I request most theatres to use that name in promotional materials/programs for search result purposes (sometimes I'm successful, sometimes not).

I always recommend people do a search first before starting on an SEO campaign, and scope out what the competition is. If the results are sparse, go for it.

Nothing wrong with being a Southerner (or coming to the South). I'm very happy to be back home in the warm weather. Hope you find this forum as helpful as I have.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Stage Management Software
« on: Mar 10, 2016, 05:08 pm »
Good points both to KMC and Mac re: upfront time commitment versus getting dividends from the that investment. The one exception to that equation that tempts me is having digital scripts that are already formatted for easy note taking. Most of us on this forum have posted a request for a script in digital format. If the big publishers agree to provide such versions (affordably), I could see that investment paying off.

I hear good things about Barbizon in Charlotte, North Carolina (for those of us in the southeast).

Tools of the Trade / Re: Stage Management Software

While I personally don't wish to use fee-based software (and choose open source at every opportunity), attending SETC last week showed that many people are developing fee-based solutions that are quite tempting. Rather than retyping or photocopying scripts to get them in a format I can use, these tools would allow SMs and actors to have a digital copy that allows for easy line notes, blocking notation, and other notifications. If theatres offer to foot the bill, I can see these kind of tools becoming a big part of the new digital landscape in a few years (at least at the bigger houses).

Introductions / Re: Aren't you the one who did the thing...?
« on: Feb 23, 2016, 03:16 pm »
Crazy! It's always ... interesting, when things go that far off during a show. Glad you and your team were able to get a solution. It's also a a good warning of things to consider: my next gig is set to be a production of Tempest with some aerial work.

Congrats on the tour, and thanks for posting all this great information. I've never been tour (yet) and the thought is a bit scary. Good to see how other people cope.

Self-Promotion / Re: On Headset: The Stage Management Podcast

Saw on Twitter and favorited to come back to: looking forward to listening.

Full disclosure: I'm creating sound FX for the show as well. The director and I reviewed those cues today. I've created a sample list of music for her to chose from if she wants it based on style and era, just thought I'd post for suggestions if anyone had any.

87
Not sure if this post is in the right place or appropriate (sorry if not mods), but I just found out before going into tech that the music I thought I would be supplied with for preshow and intermission will not be available. If any of you have worked the show: did you use music? If so, what kind?

Edited to add topic tag- Maribeth

I myself tend to lurk in online forums: I'm meeting your challenge by welcoming you in and writing a comment. Congrats on the marathon: that takes a lot of hard work and determination. Then again, based on your experience, sounds like you have plenty of that.

The Hardline / Re: Equity Report for Limited Media Appearances
« on: Jan 07, 2016, 11:14 am »
FYI to all who may read this thread later: there's a "Report of TV News Taping/Filming" template for such media appearances in the AEA Stage Manager Packet (http://www.actorsequity.org/docs/production/aea_sm_packet.pdf).

I would still make the report, even if it's just for your records. As you say, it can be easy to lose track of things without one. But I'd ask the director if the rest of the production team might like them. I'm a veteran of community theatre as well, and while it might seem everything's handled before you, it's easy for something to be settled between two people and a third person not know what's going on. When I directed a community show I made a weekly report to the board (who were arranging volunteers) to make sure everyone was in the loop, and it proved very useful.
