Self-Promotion / Annie Get Your Gun
« on: Mar 29, 2013, 10:06 am »

Over this past school year I've been working as Stage Management adviser for Endicott College in Beverly MA. Their theatre program is small; they don't offer theatre as a major.

They are performing Annie Get Your Gun April 4th, 5th, and 6th, at 7:30, as well as a 12:30 performance on the 6th.  These kids are working their butts off, and all of them are having a blast.

If you're in the area please check it out.  Seeing these kids enjoy theatre for what it is is really inspiring.

That's my understanding. Each local, or even each theater, has its own set of rules.

Employment / Re: Resumes - one page and beyond
« on: Mar 19, 2013, 08:32 am »
I met with a career counselor and he told me that it is not necessary to keep the resume to one page.

I know that if you are sending CV's to universities they expect to see more than one page, but I don't think the rest of the world is ready for a two page resume.

The Green Room / Re: Sleeping in your theatre

The couch in the stage management office at my school has the infamous reputation of eating hours of your day. Many of the stage managers here, myself included, have been late to class (or completely missed class) because we had laid down for a "ten minute nap" only to wake up three hours later.

The bed on stage (if there is one in the show that's currently up) is always pretty comfortable too, but that's only an after rehearsal/during the middle of an all nighter option.

We had a couch like that in the green room. It was so bad we called it the "soul-sucking couch".  You lay down in what you think will be a 15 minute nap only to have the couch form a comfy shape around your body, as if its giving you a hug.  Two hours later you're still there..

The Green Room / Re: Regrets

I can't think of any jobs that I regret not applying. I have a few that I regret not taking when I was offered.

Oh well. Circle of life and all of that.

I constantly have dreams that I'm stage managing Blue Man Group. Maybe it's because I interviewed with them on two different occasions.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: SCENERY: Sand Onstage
« on: Feb 26, 2013, 12:53 pm »
I agree with what everyone is saying. I just want to add that depending on where the audience sits it might be wise to have a few ushers planted in front of the stage. You wouldn't believe how many patrons would want to go up and grab/take the sand.

Thanks for the advice. They waved me over and I got a hug.  Which I believe there aren't enough of at job fairs.

Employment / Former employer at job fair-how to approach?
« on: Feb 20, 2013, 05:06 pm »
I'm planning on attending a job fair soon, and my former employer will be attending as well.

It was a summer gig that ended on what I believe was good terms.  When the new summer show was announced I emailed him saying I wasn't going to apply because I'm taking a vacation that was too good to pass up. I told him that I was available before and during tech if he needed an extra set of hands. He didn't respond.

I'm fearing that the job fair will be too small for me to avoid him. Any suggestions on how to approach him to say hi without looking/sounding awkward?

The Green Room / Re: Steering your career . . .
« on: Feb 15, 2013, 09:43 am »
I want to say the following . . .

I know I am very lucky with my career.
I am VERY satisfied with the work.

But, for the first time in my career the past 18 months I have felt very stagnant . . . and I feel very strongly that if you don't continue to learn and grow . . . this job is not worth the pain and agony.

And yes, I know I need to enjoy the journey and the adventures this career offer - and relax to understand that the next step will always be there.

And . . . there is not one straight path to success.

Not knowing the details, but it sounds like you are doing all you can to reach the next level.  I believe there is only so much steering one can do in a difficult storm.  Sometimes you have to let go and let the universe guide you.

I understand your frustration. I'm trying to branch out in a different direction.  Waiting for things to happen makes me want to tear my hair out.

The Green Room / Re: The things we give up for theatre
« on: Feb 05, 2013, 10:01 am »
The list of things we give up for theatre is long and varied, and indicated above.

But remember, we also gave up long term security for the theatre.  How brave is that? (Pat yourself on the back.)

Here's the more important question:  What have you given up for theatre, that you regret giving up? If you had the chance to do it all over again, would you do it the same way?

I gave up

-Working with people who know my position and realize that keeping me in the loop is extremely important.  I work at a place where I"m the last to know what's going on
-Being a part of the creative process instead of just coordinating it
-Calling a show.
-Opening nights-Sure they can be boring but the last time I really got dressed up was for my wedding
-Having friends at work. Where I work people are friendly, but as soon as 5pm hits they are out the door.

I probably wouldn't have changed what I did because this year I will most likely buy a house. However I think I would try to incorporate more theatre in my life than now. Even going to more shows would be worth it.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Arc Customizable Notebooks

I agree. The Circa system seems to have a cult-like following. I never needed an organizer, and so I don't understand why they are awesome. Can someone explain?

One time I tried to tape down with an Engineering ruler instead of an Architect ruler. I wouldn't recommend that.

Architect ruler for the win!
