Honestly, Office for Mac is £99 or $140....it's worth it, seriously!

I do the same - Dropbox all the way! I also try to enforce saving everything as a PDF. It makes it easier to preview the document in an email or on a Mac (for example), and Acrobat is often quicker to open than Word.

Also, always, always have version numbers and dates on every single page of every single document!

I'm not sure what you mean about having to delete the file and re-upload though...if you've downloaded the app, you can just hit save and Dropbox will automatically update.

Yes! Sorry, I've never used staves!

PSMKay, afraid your link returns a 404!

Sorry! Try this one!

E2A: Possibly obligatory disclaimer: I found this by searching for 'sheet music', and have linked this image purely for illustration purposes. I have no idea if it's copyrighted, but please don't use it for practise or performance without contacting charliemccarron.com

Thank you. Is "system" referring to the staff or clef?

A system is a set of bars/measures in one line on a page. For example, this music (http://www.charliemccarron.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Excitebike-Theme-Sheet-Music-Akito-Nakatsuka.png) has two systems.

And, when referencing a part of the music on paperwork, Page/System/Measure/Note.

But, (and SMrose touched on this) not everyone has the same page numbers. If you're working on an opera, often the chorus does not receive a full score- they just get the pages that they need.

One reason why it's very important at the beginning of rehearsals (or earlier, if possible) to check everyone has the same rehearsal figures. If there are multiple sets of figures (depending on the edition/translation of the score), everyone should go by the Conductor's figures.

That's what I thought, it just didn't seem to correlate on MarcieA's document with how many items were for each colour....especially the 'N/A' colour!

A very delayed reply, but just FYI, Copy (www.copy.com) gives you 15GB free on sign up, and Box (www.box.com) gives you 10GB. This is compared to Dropbox's 2GB....

MarcieA, what does the 'Make' column in your document refer to? I just can't work it out!!

If they're filled with air, I would have hung them from a costume rail, or similar, with a tiny bit of tape or BluTack holding each string to the rail. Then they're easily transportable (although they might move around a bit while doing so), and easy for the cast to access.

Stage Management: Other / Re: Royal Opera Live

The 17 feeds from Act 3 of The Royal Opera's Die Walkure are now available at http://www.roh.org.uk/opera-machine.

I believe, this time, the resource will be available permanently.

Won't shaving cream turn really runny after 20 minutes? I had real problems with it 'collapsing' fairly quickly.

Does the bowl break? No matter what you use, a liquid will always splatter - unless it's really thick, but then it will look fake. How about cake icing? You can play with the consistency until it works for you, colour it, etc.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Rehearsal Room 101
« on: Jun 27, 2014, 07:21 pm »
My current gig has quite a lot of students and visitors in the rehearsal room. We've just finished week 2, and I've had maybe 10 people watching - not including those with an active production role. Some of them haven't been in a rehearsal room before, and my director and I have been chatting about giving them a brief introduction into the ways of the room. Basic stuff, but things that people (including myself, probably, a few years ago) might not think of.

My list so far includes stuff for new/aspiring SMs, visitors, and new/inexperienced company members:

1- Quiet shoes! Rubber soles are the bomb, and walk on the balls of your feet!
2- NEVER walk in between the director/conductor and the cast while a scene is in motion.
3- Don't talk loudly - it just encourages others to do the same.
4- Don't set a precedent by agreeing to any unreasonable requests - it will become the norm, and you won't be able to do your job properly.
5- It is far to early in the process to alienate anyone - don't be rude or upset someone!
6- Be nice to the creatives! If you're making a tea or coffee, offer one to them too! But, as with 4, make sure it doesn't become an expectation.
7- And, last but not least - electronics on silent!

It's most definitely not a complete list, so what are your tips/rules?

I've been following this as well. While I agree that this was the only possible outcome, there are a few people (including myself), who think it's turned into a bit of a lynching - without a huge amount of verification and fact-finding. Don't get me wrong, I fully believe that homophobic people (and their comments) have no place in the arts (let alone the rest of the world) - but I don't want a good singer to have her career destroyed by misrepresentation.

Surely that would be better on a mug?!

Once my CV didn't look 'empty' without school/university, I took them off. So, school came off my CV around halfway through my sophomore year, and then university shows came off my CV about a year after graduating - while still leaving my degree on!

This seems to tie in with what you hear, but it's purely coincidence. I have classmates who took their uni shows off earlier, or later, depending on the number of professional credits they had.
