The Green Room / Re: NYTIMES: Actor Housing
« on: Sep 03, 2012, 05:14 pm »
Those are gorgeous!

I stayed  in the Surflight housing which has since been rebuilt...twice. Most recently due to a fire. However, it was really nice when I was there, and I'm not going to complain about being put up along the beach!

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Time question

Minutes, unless it's there's a time limit (i.e. each performer should have 7 mins, with 1:30 for transition between each piece).

The sizes it comes in are a little strange, though. A4/letter sheet or metre-wide roll? The cost also prices it out of pretty much everyone's range. $1,800 for the equivalent of 20 (small) rolls of Gaffa.

C

Yeah, but you can use it FOREVER.

(Still not worth it, IMO, though very cool.)

Tools of the Trade / Re: Style Question
« on: Aug 21, 2012, 10:24 pm »
My problem is that I look very young, and I'm small. In a jeans + t shirt + sneakers, I look like a junior high skater kid. Not exactly authoritative.

I dress practically, but I can't dress down. Not in my nature- I don't own sweatpants or hoodies! I'd say typically I'm in skinny jeans, a nice top/sweater/tank+cardigan, and boots or flats. Jewelry always. If there's a press event, or rehearsals/shows where I know I won't be running around, I prefer dresses but always with flats.

The Green Room / Re: Show me your mugs! (Or water bottles)
« on: Aug 20, 2012, 08:38 pm »
Since every SM I know carries one (or more).

I just got a bodum travel mug and it has changed my life.

It's a mini french press! I even cold-brewed coffee in it when it was sweltering outside.

I do need a new water bottle though, as mine has gone missing.

I've wondered though, all the directions I read for french press say to empty it after 5 minutes, since the coffee will turn bitter. Do you find that to be the case?

I haven't. The seal on the inner press part is very strong, so the grounds and any liquid below it gets sealed off from the coffee once you press it through.

Employment / Re: SM Typecasts
« on: Aug 07, 2012, 11:48 pm »
I was having this conversation with another SM recently, because I find I tend to do more left-of-center sorts of plays. Cabarets, nudity, gore, dance breaks, moving the audience halfway through, etc etc. I love the weird stuff. :) Recently, I've had a run of rock musicals, which I've really enjoyed because even though I'm not much of a traditional musical theater gal, rock concerts are something I've always enjoyed. I really just put out there that I wanted to do more musical projects, and they appeared! I'm glad to add that to my repertoire.

I try to keep my resume with a good variety of projects, to show that for every, say, All-American Genderf*ck Cabaret there's a Twelfth Night, but I think I get recommended for the same types of projects to other directors who are stylistically similar. However, I think my experience with these challenging pieces showcase skills that transfer to any production- the ability to problem solve, to adapt, and to keep things running smoothly.

The Green Room / Re: Which line would you take?

I was going to try to live In The Heights, but that doesn't seem to be a possibility, so I'm going to go with Cole Porter. Catchy AND reliable.

Enjoy Dallas! Not sure if you're a BBQ fan, but try to get to Randy's BBQ. It's delicious.

I like my theater like I like my men: with a great dance break.

I posed the same question on twitter after the fact, but again: What's the difference between her voicing her opinion on ITW, and the gleeful dogpiling on Spiderman: TOTD?

(I talk about show I see on my twitter, but I hold to "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.")
