The Green Room / Re: Funnest Tech Run Ever

My most fun tech? ART - we did everything easily, quickly and efficiently and went home early. Period. That's mine.

lots of places to buy in bulk (cheapest is 1.30-1.80 per, sold in minimums of 50-100) - but if you give these as gifts all the time it might be worth getting 50!

here's one of them - they'll send a sample for $1.80 with $20 shipping deducted w a future bulk order

a copy of the piano reduction will be the most useful to you, since it is very possible you will need music not in the vocal reduction (there are usually light cues in the midst of dance numbers, for example, but the music for those are not included, or only as "x" bars with no vocals, in the vocal score).

Cut/pasting (literally) works for me - and then I xerox the cut/paste so the page is clean. But that is because I, too, read music and it's easier for me to tie a cue to a note in a measure. Those who don't often make pages of counts (1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 in lines, over and over again) and use those for cues within dances or insert/paste those into the libretto for their clean books.

Good luck!

It's just, well, how many shows did it take for this to happen? One show in how many thousands? To my eye, this is more of an Act of God than negligence, or it would have happened more often -

Here's a real long shot

Southern Comfort
Old Settler
Robber Bridegroom

anyone?

thanks

an amusing side note, the news guy, trying to sound like he knew something, said it happened stage right - when it happened stage left.....unless the photo was inverted somehow -

Very, very cool gig. Congrats! (can I PA for you pretty please?)

And, most of these folks are creative in other ways. I look for those things they do at which they are brilliant (or at least talented and interested) and reinforce it.

Sadly, this doesn't change those who, for example, crew for cash in college or small theater productions but really only care abt the paycheck, tiny as it is. But otherwise, I agree w Mac. Finding out what they do want or what they are really good at and love, and letting them develop in that direction (or complementing it) can often be a kinder, gentler way to set someone on a better path.

acting programs putting out students who went back to get MFAs who then became acting teachers who just put out more acting teachers . . . thus creating more acting programs

[side note] - scares me, some of the actors I've seen who teach acting.....

Just something to check before anyone goes too wild in one direction or another -

Depending on the house and the phone, cells can interact w the clearcom system and, with any incoming call, create static, interfering w the ability to make calls - so that is a factor, but it's not universal. This tends to be more of an issue with smaller houses, but my board op (who polices these things) plays games on his smartphone between calls, so you need to check the issue in each space.

The Green Room / Re: thoughts on sharing
« on: Feb 07, 2011, 11:33 pm »
I will say, in retrospect, that at a show recently someone came up to me and introduced themselves as an SM looking for work. In a town where work is scarcer and scarcer, and having trained numerous young SMs who now work more regularly and at much higher pay scales, I kinda avoided sharing much and suggested alternate sources of employment - not sure I am willing to help in this case....

[on edit] I might have been more forgiving if they weren't a recent transplant from NYC, and if our jobs here weren't being taken right left and center by people coming from NY just cuz they are from NY. As an older SM who learned by experience competing with all those young bucks fresh out of SM school, I am protective of MY jobs but more willing to help in arenas where I don't work regularly.

My run sheets backstage are just my duties. Yes, as the SM I have a copy of everyone's for the archive script that gets turned in, divided by de fact "tracks" by the backstage folks, but when I am running the deck, I have everyone's run sheets but if I am crewing I just have my duties on as close to one sheet of paper as possible (or, for a complex show, Act 1, Intermission and Act 2 on separate pages)

I will give scripts to whomever is running the deck, but rarely are they used.

Employment / Re: Finding the Next Job

Hi Amy, and welcome to the boards.

This topic has been discussed at length on a variety of threads, and I will link you to some as soon as I can, but right now have only a few minutes to return your message. Please feel free to look around the boards and see what you can find in the meantime.

This isn't only for beginners/school kids. I had a (union) asm, extraordinarily sweet woman but not used to working in a union setting, whom I tried to train, but she resisted me at every step. It came down to, I will never have her backstage w me again, and at every opportunity I tell her what an amazing (fill in the blank for other career) she is.

We replaced an actor the day before tech on a show where she, after consistent resistance, attitude and issues, stormed off in a fit of pique saying "that's it I'm out". We decided to take that as her notice to quit, pushed back opening and worked (a lot) with someone who ended up being a far better fit for the role - and who learned it all in abt 3 days.

Now, that is not quite the same, but if this is her senior show, you'd think she'd place the same kind of priority you do. Fact is, she doesn't have her lines, blocking, music - despite many offers to help her catch up. So clrealy this is far more important to you than to her. And if she has to learn this the hard way, so be it. Am I evil? I just have a low tolerance for entitled folks = which (nice tho she may be and legit reasons all) is at the base.

Do what you need, but as mentioned, you might be surprised who already knows all the lines, blocking, dances, music etc - and (esp in school) it is a great opportunity to give SOMEONE ELSE a shot.
