Thanks, Matthew for that excellent report and insight. I hope you don't think I was harshing on your efforts!

Given the prior two posts I'm still interested to hear if anyone can suggest a way to make mentoring work for a web forum.

I am, however, thinking that we might want to consider some more focused attempts at teaching beyond the sporadic student challenges, which are always well-received but rarely active in terms of replies. I will ponder this, and welcome your suggestions to this end as well.

Wow, look at that poll. 176 people wanting mentors (most of them in person!) and only 46 willing to do so. Of course, the poll has been running for FOUR YEARS so that might have some effect on the numbers. Heck, the college freshmen that voted in year one of this poll are probably done now.

I would love to see how Matthew's trial run worked out. I'd love to have him post right after this to say that it was super successful, but the silence from the western front tells me it probably petered out about 6 weeks after it started. I don't mean to knock Matthew or his skill with mentoring here. He's a wonderful SM and I give him props for jumping in and giving this a shot. But I have been doing this SM website thing for 12 years now and have learned how these things work out.

SMNet's prior mentoring program failed badly, and looking at this thread I can see why. A lot of folks in the thread above are saying what they'd like to get OUT of a mentorship, but not anything about how they envision this happening. This leaves us with:

1. Pair up students with mentors
2. ??? ?
3. Magically transform students into professional stage managers!

When we've tried to do this before we've run into the same problem over and over. The two sides have grossly different expectations and it all ends in tears, and the staff winds up having to chase down mentors and students for progress reports forever. Admittedly last time we tried about a decade ago, but even so, the root causes of our problems are still the same.

I think there's a general conception of a kind of "Big Brothers/Big Sisters" sort of fostering program, or something akin to a professor/student advisor relationship that many colleges offer. Happy smiling stage managers poring over prompt books together and whispering secrets in each others ears. Some sort of combination of "Good Will Hunting" and "Finding Forrester" and, heaven forfend, "Oleanna." All well and good, but this is an internet forum. Our members are spread out all over the world. Some of our most vocal members are no longer actively SMing.

The SMA UK has only managed to put together a mentorship program this year. The US SMA has a Mentoring committee but mentoring is not mentioned at all in the US SMA's recruitment materials. This tells me it isn't a very robust program. If the paid-membership based associations with committees and dues can't pull it off, how can we do so with no budget and no real world contingent?

For me to be willing to put SMNetwork's name on it, it would have to be a quality endeavor that really focused on refining the skills of young stage managers. I'd want to see curriculum design, monthly and quarterly check-ins, staff supervision, interviews, resumes and possibly grading. Now, the internship survey that we just released was in the planning for 3 years, took nearly a full month of me doing nothing but code for 12-18 hours at a stretch, and another month of me coding 4-6 hrs per day to get the thing tested, bugfixed and launched. That is merely a fraction of what would be involved in developing code to handle a forum-driven mentorship program and track it properly. If it's what we need and I think it can be done properly I'm happy to work on the code, but I need something more concrete to work from.

So, bearing in mind that a professional stage manager is not a trained educator... bearing in mind that SMNetwork is a donation-driven web forum ... bearing in mind the kind of labor that would be involved in getting it running, let alone keeping it going... bearing in mind that anyone volunteering to mentor would be doing so in and around their work schedule...

Students requesting mentorship, how exactly do you see your mentor helping you? What sort of things would you want your mentor to teach you? I mean, do you just want an email buddy to vent to? Do you want them to go through your notes from college and cross out anything that doesn't apply in the real world? Do you want them to find you a job? Do you want them to tell you stories of what life is like? Do you want them to invite you backstage and let you call the show? Let's get specific here. If what you guys are expecting is realistic, we can talk behind the scenes about giving this a shot. However, if students are expecting things that can only be accomplished with magic fairy dust, we really need to kill this idea rather than getting people's hopes up for another 4 years.

Do you mean a medieval-type torch? If a flaming torch, is it burning? Will an electric flickering torch do? If so, is it coming out of the electrics budget or the props budget? Can we set stuff on fire in this house? If so, what is it burning? Which side will he be closer to, so we can set the fire extinguisher and douser? Does Tony's costume have floppy sleeves, or is he wearing a wig or other flammable accessories? Will the torch cast a light of any particular color? If Tony enters in blackout, how do we get the torch lit to start the show? If it isn't lit, does it have to look totally legit (e.g., wrapped in fabric - if so, what kind of fabric...)? Do we want a metal handle? Wooden handle?

If you mean torch in the British sense - a flashlight - do we want a mag lite? cheapo drugstore flashlight? Does it need batteries? Lamps? How bright should it be?

New note: In the fight scene, the Debutante pulls a bunch of garments off of the coat rack and then exits with them, running, through the house to the lobby.

The Green Room / Hell in a Handbag (A Game for Stage Managers)

I have heard from many sources that you can derail an entire production by adding a handbag. The number of questions that arise from this simple change involve departments, budgets, style, size, items inside the handbag, WHERE the items need to be inside the handbag, etc.  It's a mess.  This of course made me think... "what an awesome game!"

So this is the game.

Person #1 posts a note from a fake rehearsal report about a new item that their director has decided to add. It can be a prop, costume, scenery change, script change, falling chandelier... your call.

For example, "Maria is holding a book in I, 3."

Person #2 replies with a list of 5 or more questions that arise from this addition, and then suggests a new thing that the director wants to add. For example:

What color should Maria's book be? What size? Any particular title or author? Will the audience see the inside? Hardcover or softcover? Used or new? Should it have a pricetag on it? Does it need a bookmark? Ribbon? Tie closure? Does it get thrown? Dropped? Destroyed? Burned?

New note: Amy is eating a bagel at the start of II, 1.

Try not to repeat any items. Try to be as thorough as possible with your questions. No winners here, this is just for amusement and skill-building.

If multiple people happen to post answers right on top of each other, the next person can pick their favorite of the new items and keep right on going.

We'll start off with Amy and her bagel.

The "don't respond to this" bit is a passive aggressive little fit. They want to have the last word but when they're complaining about lack of communication you can't just let it sit. I would suggest a direct email w/o cc to the photographer:

"Sorry for wasting your time. I will do my best to make sure it does not happen again, and hope we can both work to improve our two-way communication once everyone has had a little time to think through some possible solutions."
And then an oblique postscript to the next day's report something like this:

"Unfortunately, I seem to be having difficulties with my email system. As you know, reports are normally in your inbox by (X Time) each day, so if you do not receive it by then on any given day please reach out to me and let me know. I do not always have control over problems with my email server but will do my best get you a report by some other way if this kind of server failure happens again."

With an optional:

"In the future, I will make a hard copy of the daily report available at (central location Y) in case of technical failures."

... if you see fit to do so.

You messed up, but they didn't bother to track you down before hand and confirm the photo shoot. Take the fall for it and present a solution.

Tug, I realize that this is your first post. Normally I do not bite newcomers to this extent, but you have made me angry, and unlike most of the staff here I don't have to worry about how this response will affect my future career.

We don't lie to each other here, and you are lying to us. Since your entire post is obviously spam, I went ahead and did a reference check on your email address, your real name and your IP address. It looks like you've worked on shows together with Jeff Whiting, the creator of StageWrite, an overpriced app with absolutely no utility for stage managers. You two worked together on Young Frankenstein, your names show up in the Playbill together, nicely archived online courtesy of Google's Cache.

Now, we don't like it when people show up and pretend to be giving genuine reviews, when they are actually being paid or otherwise compensated to promote products on SMNetwork. In fact, this kind of behavior normally gets them banned immediately, and the software they're pretending to endorse winds up becoming banned subject matter.

Additionally, if you'd taken a moment to read through this thread, our main concerns are that the software has absolutely no usefulness for stage managers, who do use Excel - religiously - and do make up the main membership on this site, you know. We do know how to use technology. How exactly does your fake endorsement of this product as useful for Assistant Dance Captains with no technical skill apply in any way as a means of selling the product to a group of theatre technicians? Have you ever stage managed a show in your life?

All you have done with this post is reinforced that StageWrite is apparently created by a bunch of shysters who think they can take "dim bulb" artists for a ride on overpriced software that will not interface with any other existing, established, market-leading software like the MS Office suite.

Obviously there is a niche for stage management software that nobody has filled yet - including you and your boss.

I had mentioned in amagelssen's intro thread that I could write a book on making a book when there is no book. It has occurred to me that we've not really addressed this at all, so I figured I'd open it for discussion.

We tend to take for granted that there will be a script involved, or a libretto, from which we can hang our blocking & cues. But what happens if you're working on a show with no script at all? Experimental/collaborative productions will grow and emerge throughout the entire process, and Improv requires tech as well. How do you build your prompt book when the script is being written by the company as part of the rehearsal process?

In addition to the internship survey, I've rolled out a few more changes over the past week:

1. You can now reach SMNetwork discussions and sub-boards using plain English links. 

For example, you can now get to the Green Room by going to http://smnetwork.org/forum/the-green-room instead of the old http://smnetwork.org/forum/index.php?board=7.0, you can get to your profile at http://smnetwork.org/forum/profile and you can get to threads by their name using links like http://smnetwork.org/forum/the-green-room/smnetwork-presents-the-internship-survey!

Old links still work just fine.

2. Social media links in on the left allow you to share stuff on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn and Google+ or add a link to Evernote. If you use a social media option that isn't included, shoot me a PM and I can probably add it.
