Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Cocaine Use Onstage
« on: Apr 07, 2012, 09:57 am »
HI, thanks for posting. We have addressed this in the following threads:

http://smnetwork.org/forum/tools-of-the-trade/prop-drugs-on-stage
http://smnetwork.org/forum/tools-of-the-trade/drug-use-onstage/

I know you're new here, so here's a quick tip - I found these by using the search box in the upper right hand corner for the word "cocaine".

Gonna lock this as we already have two threads on the matter, but feel free to take it up in either one of them if they don't fully answer your questions.

Way to go, doubletake! 45 days from new member registration to tournament winner is probably the fastest coup that I have seen in a long time.

@Nic, thanks so much for following our guidelines in posting. If you feel comfortable letting us know which store you work at, I'm sure some SMs would be willing to help another SM earn a few commissions here and there if they can. ;)

The "new iPad." Presumably because they learned their lesson over the iPhone 4S vs 5 debacle.

Obligatory SMNetwork feature plug: you might also be able to find prior employees in BTDT.

We now return to our regular discussion.  :o

Hi papua! Welcome to SMNetwork. I'm going to whisk this post over to our Colleges & Graduate Studies board where it will fit in better and be of use to those who come after you.

While I'm a bit concerned that you'd spend $75 to apply for a program you don't know a lot about, we can fortunately help you fill in the gaps. We've previously discussed the programs at Syracuse and Boston University. You can find them by using the search box up in the top right hand corner of the screen.

In fact, I can tell you that we've got a Syracuse student, a BU student AND a BU stage management instructor who've all checked in relatively recently around here, but I'll leave it up to you to figure out who they are.

If this had been a suit with an expense account on a business trip who picked up a hooker, nobody would have even mentioned it.  That's the kind of stuff people make romcoms about.

JPL, you telegraphed some of the issues in your choice of phrasing. Small company... trolling... on the internet. That doesn't seem like the language I'm used to hearing from you. I wonder if the situation might have been blown out of proportion due to the environs and your opinion may have gotten a little biased through no fault of your own.

Back in '96 I worked for a stock co where the GM was caught with her hand in the box office till on a six-figure take that pretty much broke the company. She was noisily dismissed, and her little dog too, and it was the talk of the company for the rest of the season. 16 years later I think I remember her first name but the rest of the details are all gone. Time heals all wounds, I guess.

Your singer guy has some issues with etiquette but I think after the mess of the last time he probably learned his lesson about boundaries when staying in strangers' houses. I do not doubt that your former coworkers who dealt with the company management side of the mess have blabbed about it through the community, so he's probably dealt with some collateral damage already. As long as he isn't bringing any strangers into the theatre, it's way outside your purview.

The Green Room / Re: Things Stage Managers Say
« on: Mar 20, 2012, 10:42 pm »
Are we still doing a video?  I would like to film some stuff.  I seriously thought about doing one myself before I saw this post.  I am also available to edit, should we find a place to post footage.

Sorry for the lag. I have been working 50 hr/7 day weeks without a day off since early February - that's the burden of running two businesses. Our server space is not sufficiently ample to handle storage for video. I would suggest using the Facebook group to up the original footage if that's a viable option, although something tells me that this meme's moment has already passed.

With this as with all things you guys are welcome to do whatever projects you like that might arise out of our discussions. Just bear in mind that we're a little tight on storage space on this server.

I have to admit that I was really worried when I thought that the same mishap might have happened twice. In this case, I am VERY relieved that it's a rehash. It's always good to revisit the reasons why we get so worried about safety on a periodic basis.

With thousands of stage managers and tens of thousands of unique visitors every month, SMNetwork is a prime target for software developers, tool manufacturers and other sellers of tech theatre stuff that might interest stage managers. We have this nice "tools of the trade" board that seems to be a good place for advertisers to promote their stuff. We're still waiting on the perfect killer app for stage management. But SMNetwork doesn't permit advertising, except from donors, and even then it has to be for non-profit charity events only.  New members' links are mangled to prevent search engine optimization. So how do you bring your product to the attention of all of these stage managers?  Well, we have some suggestions.

1. Register and post an introduction to our Intros board.
2. Spend at least a week reading about how we do things - especially the rules, and also some of our reactions to other products that people have brought to our attention. Some people have succeeded. Others have flubbed it really badly. Learn from their success/failure.
3. Designate the person in your company who knows the most about stage management to be your liaison to SMNetwork. They don't have to write well. They do need to be friendly.
4. Before you post anything that might even be remotely construed as advertising, send the text of your post to a member of the staff via the PM system. We know what will get removed for looking spammy.
5. This is a discussion board. If you introduce a product, do so in a way that allows discussion, feedback, critique and commentary.
6. Make sure your product is useful for stage managers. Do not attempt to sell us something made for directors, actors, or musicians and expect it to be useful for us as well. Our job is wholly different from any of the above.
7. The most successful promoters have offered us the opportunity to participate in beta tests, talk with the developers or otherwise help in the creation and tailoring of the final product so that it's actually something we can use. Stage managers like to build teams and fix things. This lets us do both and will help to build interest in your stuff in a far more organic way.
8. If you have any affiliation with the product you are trying to promote, you MUST disclose the affiliation. Better to come clean and say "this is made by my friend's brother's uncle" or "I worked on a show with the person who makes these items" than to have us catch you in it later on.

Here are some things not to do:
1. Please do not include a link to your product in your very first post.
2. Please do not pretend to be a regular Joe who "just happens" to like your product, when you're actually trying to sell it. Stage managers make a living out of being able to tell when professional liars are lying. We can see through you. You will be called out for it and banned.
3. Please do not assume you know what we do for a living unless you've actually done it.
4. Don't mention your product in your username, your posts, your intro, your personal messages, or your signature until you've made at least 10-15 posts as just a regular person. On any other site you'd need to pay real money to advertise. We require content, and a demonstration that you're personally invested and interested in the stage management community, instead of cash.
5. Stage managers are individualists and accustomed to a certain level of authority and respect in our work. Please do not treat us as if we are sheep, mass consumers, or stupid.

These rules are non-negotiable. No exceptions.

For those of you who have joined the boards since 2008, (and who hasn't, really...) the link to our original discussion of the event is here: http://smnetwork.org/forum/stage-management-plays-musicals/props-actor-cuts-throat-on-vienna-stage-bbc-news/

This reflects back to the current thread in P&M about the director who wants to use real guns backstage.

This is what happens when directors decide to rely on props and effects to make their "risky statements." Theatre should not be trying to compete with movies. IMHO the risk should come from pushing the boundaries of human relationships, not blood packs.

Hi everyone!  Thank you again for all of your input.  It was definitely helpful, and I took a lot of your suggestions into consideration.  Here are the basics of what was proposed (in addition to the general education classes as required by the university):

Series of SM classes (every semester for 4 years) addressing basic technique, job options, skills needed, communication, dealing with difficult people, differences in styles of opera, dance, and theatre, understanding design process, and many of the other issues that were discussed in the thread.  This would be taught in a modular, progressive format, and would include guest artists from many fields.
SM Lab - which is the hands-on opportunity that students can apply the skills they learn in rehearsals/performances of on-campus shows.  This class would also have a once a week "forum" where everyone in the program can meet and discuss challenges and issues that they have dealt with during the week.  Each student would work on 2 shows per semester.

Other classes would include

Intro to professional theatre
Production and stagecraft
basic acting
basic dance (choice of styles)
choice of foreign language
drafting, both hand and CAD
Playscript analysis
Psychology and Communication
Intro to Arts Management
Production Management
Theatre history
Music theory
Directing

The proposal is in, and now is being evaluated by the powers-that-be to determine whether it will be approved.  The tentative plan is that it would start for the 13/14 school year.  As the process continues I will try to keep everyone updated.

Everyone's assistance with this project was invaluable.  It was incredibly helpful to have so many people take the time to add their thoughts.  Thank you all!!
